avast.setup no version no.?

During installing the last program update I clicked cancel to interrupt it because I’d forgotten to do something, when I tried this I got a message saying avast might be corrupted if I did this, but before I could answer avast had finished installing so I just went ahead. Now I get avast.setup asking to access the internet, it’s not so much the component asking for access that bothers me, but rather ZoneAlarm doesn’t show a version no. for it, the field is just blank. Could the no version no. be linked to the fact I almost cancelled the install and if so if there any way to repair it without doing a fresh install and without losing my settings. Could this be a malicious program etc. also?

Thanks for any help you can offer, notdarkyet.

my zonealarm doesn’t show too…is that a problem??? ???

i don’t think so…

Bump

This is normal, avast.setup doesn’t have version info in it…
Is that a problem?

Why isn’t shown the version number?
Is it so difficult?
When other programs are updated, the user can see the version number change at the firewall :stuck_out_tongue:

What directory does this avast.setup live? I’m trying to get this thing working with Sygate and can’t find it. Is it generated by the updater on the fly? Or is it hidden in some way I can’t see it? I found a pre-fetch for it, but that’s all. I can’t setup an advanced rule if it’s not a static file and I can’t see it.

Is there any way to backup a version to the older program that worked on my system?

This is from the setup log, as you can see it can’t get out because of the firewall:

It’s not a problem if you say it isn’t Vlk, thanks for the reassurance.

Oh, and Beck, avast.setup’s filepath on my comp. is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup, although I can’t see it also.

The problem with version info is that it must be known in compile time – which is not the case with avast where the generation of the installation packages is taking place long after the compilation. True, we may patch the version info in the EXE files after they’re finished but that’s something we wanted to avoid…

VLK Please no patches.
We get enough of those in Windows. ;D

Why can’t we see avast.setup file?

Because it’s not there. Upon the update request, it’s created there from a backup copy, run, and then deleted. There are technical reasons to do it such way.

Where is the backup copy? ::slight_smile:

setup.ovr

Thanks Vlk.
Now I can use this file to make a link to Control Panel, you know what I mean

can you kindly further elaborate?? ;D

shgoh, kubejc said this will corrupt avast installation… I think it’s better do not consider my previous post as a solution… Let’s forget :-\

See http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=4164;start=0#lastPost

shgoh,
Maybe that was to technical and wasn’t meant for our eyes… ;D

It`s not bob… I just want a shortcut to control panel applet of avast…
Try doing that. My installation was not corrupted but like kubejc said, it can be…
If yours get corrupt, try to repair. Never mind, it wasn’t a secret.
Rename setup.ovr to setup.exe and run it ;D

got it tech…thanks for clarifying

Technical my friend,
I was right in the first place : it’s to technical.
Some things a novice like myself, should just leave to the experts.
