Avast Shields Block SSH connections randomly

Hello,

I’m currently using Avast Internet Security version 11.1.2245. I’m using, and have used for years, putty to SSH into a local network server to maintain it. At times, I’ll connect to the server with no problems. After work through SSH for a while (20mins to 1 hr) it will disconnect for no reason. Other times, I’m not even able to connect to the server through SSH (I’m also not able to access the website hosted from this server).

I recently found that disabling all Avast’s shields allows access to the server. I can then enable the shields and it will work for a random amount of time after that until disconnecting me. It is also as if Avast checks for connections at some interval and if it find something over the SSH ports, it will block the connection.

I’m able to work around this issue but I’m not sure why it is an issue and I don’t think it should be. Am I missing some setting to allow connections through? Seems like if this was the case, I shouldn’t be able to make the SSH connection without disabling the shields though there are times when I can connect without doing this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update to the latest version (2016.11.1.2253): https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=182468.0

Sorry about the slow response. Thanks for the suggestion.

So, I’ve updated avast to the newest version and I’m still having the same issue with the connection being lost after some intermittent time using putty. I can bring the connection back by disabling the shields.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

patt1333, on what port does your SSH server runs? (80, 443) ?

OS: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit SP1
No other security software installed
On this computer, I believe I’ve used Norton and Kaspersky internet security

SSH server runs on an Ubuntu Linux server which is internal to my network. I’m not SSHing over the internet so it doesn’t use port 80/443. I’m currently using the default port 22 for SSH.

As Lukas joined the topic, wait for his advice.

Any update?

Still have this issue.

Thanks
