Avast site blocking it look have a lot of improvement, if we put a sentences such as “porn” on the site blocking field.
Then even user try to search engines such as google or yahoo, then avast WebShield will blocked with notifications.
This is very useful for all of the parents in here which would like to secure the internet access on your home to avoid any miss used by your childs.
I hope this information could help you to find a good solutions rather than using another 3rd party applications to run with avast antivirus in terms of Web Proxy scanning and blocking.
It will work… but indeed a parental control based only in words is very weak (in its concept).
Site rating (categories) is necessary.
Ten years ago there were a program that does image analysis online and block pictures/sites. It works but the developers have abandon it.
As I knew in terms of web security solutions mostly based on :
Database of 3rd party vendor, which’s provide world wide database for restricted website such as porn, gambling, social networking etc (i.e: commtouch)
2.Based on ReGex or phrases, this features mostly have in secure web gateway solutions which’s the concept such as avast webshield blocking based on phrases that we stated in the list
Based on ip address of the web server (this method frequently used by administrator, since a lot of webserver has a web server more than one server and ip public)
And according to your information that web blocking could blocking based on the pictures of the website that is new for me. Because as I know this strategy more in depth used as antispam filtering which’s for each incoming messages which’s contains such as viagra or other nude picture shall be blocked or rejected.
There are tons of free parent content filtering programs. K-9 Web Protection,Online Family Norton and Windows Live Family Safety. You can also use OpenDNS with Parent filtering.
I would say you should go for a specialist application as the URL Blocking isn’t geared up for this type of thing. the more * wildcard strings you have in it could impact on the loading of pages as it searches/compares and with wildcards the more chance of innocent sites getting picked up because of the wildcard use.
OpenDNS, is good in that it doesn’t appear to have any overhead to its blocking.
OpenDNS Family settings will block porn. I personally use Windows Live Family Safety. Works great and you can remotely control it. K-9 is very effective but it does not differentiate between users. So for those occasional times an adult wants to visit porn he needs to disable K-9.
The only suite currently with real parent controls built into it is KIS. The 3rd party world has content filtering covered by miles. So Avast would have a lot of ground to cover. There is also a Firefox add on for content filtering.
