I’ve been using Avast for roughly 2 years without a problem, until i recently purchased a new laptop. This is when i realised avast was slowing down my net specifically for this laptop. I am certain it is an issue with avast, as i performed downloads and updates on game clients, the download speed shot up once i deactivated the shields. Is there anyway i can fix this?
Well, Web Shield scans the contents of the internet traffic and this take resources. In the majority of the cases it would be unnoticeable.
Which other security programs do you use? Firewall?
well aside from the standard W7 firewall, theres no other firewalls i have up and avast is the only antivirus im using atm
I noticed this too. If I run Speedtest.net from a Win7 laptop running Mcafee, I get 25Mb/sec download, but on my Win XP SP3 desktop, I get 14Mb/sec. If I disable Web Shield, it’s back up to 25Mb/sec. Maybe I always had this issue and never knew it when I had DSL @ 1.5Mb/sec, but became aware of it when I just upgraded my broadband to Comcast 25Mb service. Other than disabling Web Shield, or using something other than Avast, is there something I can do to fix this?
u might wanna try manually using a stopwatch to time the download/upload of files to see if web shield really slow down ur internet speed by a lot.
Does anyone know if this is a common result of using any Web page protection, or if this is specific to Avast? My laptop has 4-CPU cores, whereas my desktop has 2, so maybe more recent h/w does better. But I still need something that does better on my desktop.
hmm actually any http scanning by security programs will slow down web surfing by a certain extent (just how much).
it does seem to vary from system and ISP providers and to a certain extent as reported by some ppl here, the maximum upload/download speed (for web shield)

Thanks for the link. That thread suggests the Firewall may have an effect on the download speed. I have ZoneAlarm, tried disabling it, and saw no change. As others in that thread noted, disabling Web Shield in Avast had the most dramatic effect. I’m seriously thinking of installing the free Norton suite that Comcast gives you, but apart from the speed problem, my ZoneAlarm/Avast combo works well, so I’m torn.
I would drop ZA.
