Avast Slows Firefox ?

It really slows it down, takes a minute + to open FFox and another 10 until I can type anything. If I have FFox open, and click on a desktop link, it still takes that long for a new tab to open.

It might be a conflict with Adblock Plus and the Avast web shield?

I created a new Profile, and didn’t load any Extensions, and FFox opens right up. As soon as I add AdBlock, it’s slow again. I disabled the Avast shields and FFox opens up as it should.

Can I tweak the web shield settings to help with my problem? How about adding FFox to the Exclusions? I already have but maybe I added it wrong? (see screenshot)

I’m on an XP computer, FFox version 32.0.3, Avast Free, Windows Firewall, and have AdBlock Plus with Easy List filter. This has been going on for almost a year!

As a side note, I would not trust that website and definatly not put it in the exclusion list:
https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=sketchucation.com
http://multirbl.valli.org/lookup/144.76.69.227.html
http://dnscheck.pingdom.com/?domain=sketchucation.com

OK Eddy I took that one off the exclusions. I’ve been going to that forum for years though. I have a problem with it loading so slowly because the server is in Germany.

any ideas about my Avast settings, or what I could tweak?

Tried another browser?
I suggest to try the site with Opera and see if that one is slow also.

Only this site is slow or others as well?

It’s just that one site that’s slow, but that isn’t my issue here today, it’s FFox in general taking so long to open.

I disabled the web shields and it worked as expected. It ‘might’ be a conflict with the Adblock plus and Avast.

Already tried a repair of avast?
Disabled the AOS?

Edit:
Did some more checks.
The site itself is slow due to bad programming.
Looks like there is not much you can do about it.

If you want, we can take a look if there are things on your system that shouldn’t be there.

aw heck, how do I try and Repair Avast?

sorry Eddy but what is AOS?

Repair:
control panel > software > avast > change > choose repair

AOS is the browser add-on from avast.

yes I had the AOS disabled.

did the Avast repair, no change in FFox opening up though.

boy, installed the MWB and it crashed my system. I remember having trouble with it before, and uninstalled it in 2010. I’ve done Boot scans with Avast, can you recommend another malware scan program I can try?

Run Farbar from the link I gave you and attach the logs to your next post.
Let’s see if something strange comes up.
If nothing strange comes up, we at least have ruled out several things.

Thanks so much for the help so far Eddy!

you know, I’ve suspected I have a bad driver somewhere.

It is getting late here, so I only had a really quick look at the logs.
I do see some things that need to be fixed, but (unless I overlooked it) nothing that is really dangerous or something like that.
Please do not change anything to the system.
I will have another look with a fresh mind tomorrow and let you know what/how to fix things.
Unless someone else beats me to it

wonderful,

you get some sleep Eddy, talk with you tomorrow

OK Eddy, I’m up

Have you tried re-installing Firefox?

No I haven’t re-installed FFox Valinorum, I created a new Profile though (and didn’t add the AdBlock) and FFox worked as it should.

on the adblock forums we were were trying to resolve it and couldn’t, we narrowed it down to a possible conflict with AdBlock+ and the Web Shield.

on the FFox forum, they say Avast’s Web Shield is the culprit and I should disable it. Do you see a problem with dis-abeling the web shield?

Could I tweak these web shield settings at all?

Look who’s back. It’s me. ;D

Latest news:
We haven’t found anything really harmful.
Other people say add-block + avast + FireFox are working fine together.
avast had (for a little while) their own add-blocker build into the av and it was based on the original add-blocker.
Why it doesn’t work nicely for you is a riddle to me.

I would say, delete FireFox
Reboot
Run http://www.glarysoft.com/glary-utilities/download/ (disk cleaner and registry repair)
Reboot
Install FireFox again
See if it changed anything.

darn, I’m apprehensive about removing FFox … loose all the Settings, whatever.

what else should I do besides export my bookmarks?

Nothing else should be needed, unless there is a power failure or something like that while you do it.
It never hurts to backup data and or create a drive image before doing something.
