Avast Software Updater

I heard rumors that Avast Software updater locks up windows when you update something, I am really worried, what should I do? Should I use Software Updater or not? I am really scared? is this a bug , has it been fixed?

I have used and still using Avast Software Updater. I haven’t seen or faced any issues about Avast Software Updater locking up windows. Are you facing any sorts of issues on your computer? What antivirus did you have prior to Avast? What Windows OS and SP are you using?

Ya sure this doesnt happen? i mean go search “avast software updater locks up windows yahoo answers” when i read it it scared me

That’s 100% false. Rumors are sometimes true, but in the case it isn’t true. Avast Software Updater is a useful tool, it tells you what programs you have installed are not up-to-date.

How many years have u use avast ? and thanks for the replies

I have been using Avast since the very 1st version of version 7 which was released on 2012 and I am still using it and have no regrets after having had to use tons of free and paid antivirus. Finally made the final switch to Avast. Avast is a great and A+ antivirus. I am an Avast customer forever. Your welcome :). If you are curious of anything about Avast and not thinking about rumors just ask here. Help here is free and top notch

The software updater only monitors certain program updates, commonly these are programs that may be targeted by malware, etc. and these are generally programs that interface with the internet. Just open the software updater and you will see what programs that you have installed that it monitors for updates.

It shouldn’t have any interaction with Windows Update.

I have been using avast for over eleven years, but that is of no account when talking about the software updater as this has only been an avast module for the last few avast program versions. That said I have never had an issue with it. It is also configurable and you can switch off updates for an individual program if you don’t want avast to monitor that program.

I have been quite happy with software updater. With SU from Avast I can check once a while for updates and dont be bothered all the time by other program pop-ups. (read: I can completely shut down Java and Flash updaters and much more.)

The only problem I have noticed is with Mozilla Thunderbird - as it is offering false updates.
Avast version: 2015.10.2.2218

Thunderbird version: 31.7.0 - checked updates from inside the Thunderbird and it is up-to-date version.
Avast offers new version: 38.0.1 - ? what is it?

I also tried to install “new” Thunderbird via Avast few weeks ago on another PC and it installed to different folder and also kept the old Thunderbird folder (thus 2 Thunderbird installations)!

Quite happy with Avast anyway… just please remove the Google Chrome and Avast Mobile popup adverts >:(
I must admit that I also tried another antivirus because of this, but went back to Avast because its still the best one out there ??? .

Btw did you notice that your main website avast.com redirects to https://www.avast.com/no-no/index ? Somehow bypasses the language settings, I personally have czech - english in my browser settings, viewing from czech IP.

Mozilla Thunderbird 38.0.1 is a major update. It is a huge jump from 31.7.0 to 38.0.1

No, Avast Software Updater did the right thing, and offered the Mozilla Thunderbird 38.0.1 update shortly after it was available.

Greetz, Red.

So Avast gets software releases prior to their deployment on Mozilla update servers?
Because that is exactly what happened.
…or maybe you flag beta release as stable?

I manually checked through Thunderbird’s “Check for new version” and it told me there is no new version available.
Now i manually checked again and you are correct, 38.0.1 is available.

I dont trust the Avast SU Thunderbird installer anyway as it did bad things (described in previous post) last time (~ 2 - 3 weeks ago).

Hi Jeuffrey, ( Sorry, I was busy on Skype )

The Thunderbird update was already available as an installer, while Thunderbird itself indeed told us that no new version was available.
I know that, because that was also posted on a Dutch software website, and I checked it myself.
So I downloaded the Thunderbird installer, to install it later when I was ready with my work.
But about an hour later Avast prompted me too that the update was available.
