Avast + spyware/rootkits?

I was browsing the internet today and came across this article

in it it says Avast doesnt cover spyware and rootkits, is this correct or have they got it wrong?

It is wrong to say avast doesn’t detect spyware, whilst it isn’t a specialist anti-spyware, it does detect a lot of spyware. It also detects some rootkit files but again it isn’t a specialist anti-rootkit.

okay, as I said Avast is a great product, just thought I would point it out

ps how long rougthly does it take from the virus being on the internet to having a definition made for it?

Unfortunately there are many ill informed reviewers.

I have no idea on how long it would take to include a new virus/malware definition, I’m just an avast user like yourself. Apart from the fact there is the different classification adware, spyware, virus, worm, etc. which would effect priority.

U should not hope for the av to secure u from the virus…
not all spyware, virus, adware and many more threats not been detect by all av…
some av that detect one type of virus but the others not…
the best thing using av with other security software such as firewall and antispyware…
I suggest u to use kaspersky as it has good detection and good for a normal user who didnt know nothing…
Avast also good but not good enough to prevent any new virus…
unlike kaspersky…there rr some program that secure the computer from been damage by new virus before detect in the virus database…
but it just for simple virus…if u not update all av will no good as some virus like virut/vortob also can infect ur av
the important is to keep your computer up to date…

for me…avast is good…but if u not doent know about computer then i prefer kaspersky…it more secure with it but u need to pay for it…

Your knowledge of computers is not what will save you - and is pretty much irrelevant, though it may play a part in the antivirus protection you select.

Most well known sites employ antivirus scanning of their own to ensure that viruses are not proliferated from their site. If you frequent some of the more adventurous and perhaps questionable sites on the Internet then you must avail yourself of the highest level of of antivirus security available. This is where paying for Kaspersky would make sense.

If you largely visit well known and everyday sites on the Internet you are likely to find - as I and many others have - that avast will keep you safe for many years.

I tend to keep a strict eye on what websites people use in my family and give them strict warnings when they waver to unknown or suspicious sites, I myself am very cautious and will go out of my way to avoid dangerous websites and downloading files which I dont really need. I think Avast has served me well so far and I make sure its updated and that my firewall is configured to the best standard it can be

Hi guys

I would like to add I DO visit warez sites on a regular basis -not, I’m not pirating, I just do some part-work for a security blog- and I find avast! EXTREMELY reliable.

If mojako likes K well, is his like. May be all the artillery exhibited by K may intimidate some people and make them think it is the ultimate solution but I don’t. I myself used KIS long time ago and found it a damn good product, but a bloated one too. It is heavier on resources, does not have a way-lot-more detection rate than avast! and also is slower than avast! on some duties.

But as I said is a skin matter

I remember I saw a lot -LOT- years ago a Logitech ad where there were several people seated on a bench, side by side: a grandmother, a computer genius, a construction worker, a business man, a household woman, a (american) football player and a kid, every of them reading a magazine; the picture was in black and white except for they’re shoes that were in red: the elegant shoes of the businessman, the boots of the worker, the football shoes of the player and so on. The ad’s text said: “Because we are not all equals, there’s an option for everyone” and then there was several shots of their recent mice.

Just because avast! seems little ‘bald’ when comparing with other AVs -personally I prefer it that way- does by no way means it’s inferior to them. Just watch any speciallized publication, i.e. av-comparatives.org and you would see detection rates are really high.

You like the K? Cool! but please don’t say avast! is inferior, please research a little more kid… 8)

By the way: regarding to avast! GUI -user interface- I think it’s plain excellent. I love the main menu that shows when clicking the blue logo -excellent, really- and I definitely do like the yellow lines that pop-up at the botton of screen giving a glimpse of what’s happening on my system and what duties are doing avast!. I like the colours, the way it appear and dessapear. Also the time lapse when they appear/disappear is just right.

Sory to say I use avast first then kaspersky…
and for your information, avast unlikely to be slow in detection then kaspersky in many new varient…
i know kaspersky is heavier application…
but it have better protection at all…
im sure you didnt try many kaspersky products…
i have try a lot of it…
the most secure ever used is business products…
in the most recent days, Avira looks better in detection of new variant…
this is most important as the new generated virus detect earlier to prevent further attack…
but recently if ur com already infected Avira is not preffered…
I already be a kaspersky user right now and never had experience to new Avast prog…
So I cannot say anything to new Avast…
and for your info, im a always help my friends about virus, before using kaspersky… I using Avast…
and what happen is they always come back to me for just a simple virus script virus…
they didnt know com well thus i preffered them to use kaspersky…fast detection and well good protection…
