The strange thing about it is that at times, after the clicking on the blue icon > Start avast! anti virus> Test of memory & start up,… it disappears & than reappears after a big lag or leaves a blurry shadow with “Start avast! anti virus” displayed on the desktop exactly where it normally is?
Any guesses why…due to decreasing memory/ memory full…but the machine has 2 GB of physical ram @ 667…does it need to be reinstalled/repaired?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What is your firewall ?
Check the Task Manager and report a) what avast processes are running, they begin with ash or asw, b) when this happens what CPU% is in use and which processes are using the majority of it ?
I don’t know if the restore image might have anything to do with it (I wouldn’t have thought so), but you could try a reinstall of avast.
This used to happen with my machine, and it turned out to be interference from another security app., in this case Threatfire 3.5. (TF 4 fixed that.)
So I’d suspect another AV or security app as certainly being a likely culprit.
The stall disappears & the programs starts instantly when I closed down Yahoo & Windows Live Messenger firstly.
There after it starts normally even if I have the 2 applications opened…but not the first time when I turn On my computer, start these 2 applications & than try to run Avast virus??
Well lets deal with those remnants of menus, etc. as I think your wording of the Title Avast Stalls has led us off at a tangent (we are looking for a reason that avast stalls, e.g. stops working) and it is the graphical remnants that you really mean ?
Thought with your last post, I’m not sure exactly what that is any more.
Graphics glitches, etc. - Menu, Display Remnants, Log Viewer Remnants, Graphics glitches, etc.
Edit the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini using Notepad [Common] section, add the following line to the section SunbeltKPFHack=2, save the file, you will be prompted by the avast! Self-defence module if this is OK answer Yes. Whilst this is primarily for Sunbelt or Kerio Personal Firewalls it may well work even if you don’t use either of these firewalls.
So just adding this line means avast doesn’t stall (though I’m still not sure what you mean by this) ?
Our definition of froze or stall is avast has stopped working, zero activity, no scanning, nothing, but I still don’t know what you mean by frozen or stalls ?
By adding the line to the avast4.ini file, common section would get rid of the graphical artefacts (remnants of menus, etc.) it would have no impact on our definition of stalls or frozen.
By Stall I meant & mean that Avast stops to scan after it has done a scan of memory & start up objects & the graphical interface of Avast on demand scanning disappears from the desktop, leaving behind the displayed remnant.
I have yet to see whether the adding of a line to ini file has helped or not.
Personally, as wrote earlier it does that at least once only, when Yahoo & Windows live are signed in & not when they are not being used.
Even if they are being used it does that once or twice than the graphical interface of scanner appears.
OK, I would doubt that the avast4.ini modification would have any impact on the scans.
You didn’t answer this question and it could have a very large impact:
