I have found a bug in the avast system! While running windows xp with all updates installed, i had spybot search and destroy running along with windows defender. (they are scanning at the same time.) I open avast antiviruis, and the memory scan starts. It then finishes and guess what? the avast simple user interface doesn’t come up. nothing. then, i notice after spybot finishes, (some time later.) avast then comes up with the window. This issue only happens while running windows defender and spybot search and destroy at the same time. Any other time upon opening avast antiviruis, the memory scan starts and the when it finishes the avast simple user interface appears immediately. I just wish to make this problem known, i am hoping it will be fixed soon. Only when those 2 programs run at once does the issue appear. I have tried them with adaware and windows defender both running and the avast simple user comes up. I have found that it only applies when running spybot and windows defender at the same time. I have all avast updates applied, i have the latest version of avast. build- may 2007 (4.7.1001) xtreme toolkit version- (1.9.4.0) using active skin version- 4.2.7.3 I just wish that avast software team will read my blog and fix this bug. thank you.
I wouldn’t say that is a bug but trying to run three scans at the same time is going to swamp your resources.
In fact you will have four scans trying to grab resources, S&D, Windows Defender, avast SUI and Standard Shield poking its nose into things, as the other non-avast scans try to open a file for checking, the standard shield will butt in, so you have lots of action going fighting for system resources, namely CPU cycles.
I would never contemplate running three different on-demand scans at the same time.
Even when I’m going to run another scan, adaware or avg-as (aka ewido), I pause the standard shield, this stops dual scanning, avoids potential conflict if avast detects something that is unpacked by the other scanners and speeds up overall scan duration. Once the others scan/s are done enable standard shield and do your SUI scan.
Although it will use that much resources and will have double scanning, I see no reason for the process to be ‘halted’ and the interface come just after other scanning finish… Why?
Why, I have said it many times before, conflict and resources, we have seen it recently with spybot S&D where avast alerts on S&D unpacking (plus other stuff) and on other occasions alerts on signature files unpacked to the Temp folders, etc.
Not to mention the originating poster’s system screeching to a halt with multiple scans being attempted. I see no point in offering advice not to have two active AV scanners installed to avoid conflict, so why not pause standard shield when scanning with another security application.
Whilst I have seen in these forums issues with conflict and resources issues, I have ‘never’ seen any problem because standard shield was paused to do a third party security scan. So that would prompt the question, why not ;D
yes thats what i am saying…why? i see no reason ether. besides, i run 3 scans usaully at once and my system isnt slow at all…i have a 2.5ghz processor with 760 mb of ram/ when i hit the start button it instanly pops up. this situation just started happaning. it didnt before.
besides the 2 programs are spyware hunters, not antiviruis. i dont want to stop avast while my spyware scanners scan.
I still cannot understand why the program is halted in memory…
Resources, even few, are there… It should take time, but not a halted process.
There is not a conflict… the process is halted, not crashed, there is not a conflict, for sure.
I see no point in offering advice not to have two active AV scanners installed to avoid conflict, so why not pause standard shield when scanning with another security application.I'm not offering him this... just I can't understand what is going on with avast... Besides this, my opinion is to NOT disable the resident in any circumstance, even while using other scanner.
Your system your choice, but it was you who were reporting a problem with three scans running at the same time. There is so much crossover in signature detections avast detects some adware and spyware also, but the major factor is standard shield pre-scanning files that the other scanners want to open to check (which to my mind is wasted processing) as standard shield locks the file until that is done.
On the subject of done, that is enough for me, I’m not trying to convince you, I have said my piece now it is your choice.
