Avast started blocking some online banking functions

I’ve been using Avast for about 10 years. About three weeks ago after a major update it started causing logouts in my online banking accout e.g. when trying to get a file downloaded. It appears to block javascript.void() or something. If I disable it entirely, the download works. Disabling the URL watcher only does not help. The problem happens in both Firefox and Chrome.

First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.

Are you getting an Avast Alert ?
If so if you can do a screenshot (with the See details option in the alert selected), saved to your system and using windows explorer of other file handling program, drag and drop the file into your post.
If there is anything confidential in the screenshot, edit, obscure and save it before uploading it.

Have you set an exclusion, if so where and what is it break https to hxxps active link or just use my screenshot below of how to add an Exclusion in Avast.

No, I’m not getting any alerts. Just the access is blocked and the reaction of the bank is to close the login so I need to login again. As I said, disabling Avast causes the download (in this case my monthly credit card statement) to function normally. I had not excluded that website from anything. This behaviour started out with an unrelated forum page first and that I did put into the exceptions but that didn’t help either. For the sake of testing, I have now added the exception and got one step further. Now the list of statements gets displayed before I get a “site not found” error in the browser and (after disabling Avast again and refreshing the page) see the logout screen. I still wasn’t able to get my statement downloaded without disabling Avast entirely.

I download statements from my Bank all of the time without any issue, using Firefox my default browser.

I have an exception set (like the example image shown) for it so it doesn’t interfere with any bank security check when logging on, etc.
What Avast Program and version number are you using ?
Are you using a VPN ?

Since you say with an exception set you get one stage further put then a problem. Is it possible that this is actually a change to the URL you set ?

Are you using browser extensions, especially security related, I use uMatrix and Ublock Origin Lite ?

It seems very strange that even with the Web Shield disabled this still happens as that is the component that interacts with internet connections.

I don’t need exceptions for the logon. That works fine. As for any change in the URL: I cannot see that, the mouse over on the download button reads javascript:void(). My Avast version is this:

There’s no VPN and I use AdBlockPlus in the browser but have enabled all there for the banking site. It did work before that Avast update some weeks ago, I didn’t change anything in my configuration.

Unfortunately I’m out of ideas. But the use of the javascript:void() you mention could potentially be the reason for block/conflict. Now I don’t know exactly what you have entered in the URL exception, that would essentially only work for that exact path example image.

If there happened to be any sub.domain involved that may not work, for instance if you changed the www. reference in my image to *. after the https:// that should also include sub domains of that web site. However it wouldn’t cover a redirect or import from another domain.

However, I’m not running the latest Avast Version as you can see from my details.

Can you try disabling “Real Site”?

That did help for the download but what is the point in having a virus scanner for the internet if I have to disable it every time I want to do something in my browser?

It is the Web Shield that does the internet security checking. The Real Site is a different beast, checking the site you are on is real.

That said The Exclusions should also work for the Real Site.
Avast Real Site Exception.
