Up to know I’ve been extremely happy with version 5.0 Internet Security. I’ve got it on three machines.
Now, one Avast program on one computer can’t be started and is totally unresponsive. I run Windows XP Home and connect via DSL.
From studying other very similar signs and symptoms, on this forum, it appears most victims of this malfunction must vigorously delete the Avast program and reload. However, I’ve got the DVD to reload with but am not sure how to do it since the initial downloads came thru the internet.
Any comments or directions would be most appreciated!
I’ve still got most of a two year agreement left to go.
I’m probably going to have to do this on the other two computers as well.
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
Download the latest avast! version and save it. There is 5.0.590 right now.
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
One other thing. About that license, when I go to my saved license file it says: “License.avastic is not a valid license file.[00000002]”.
I’m not sure I can document a license to re-up after scrubbing and re-booting.
I have a Reference number which is the same as the Order number.
Is that the license number, too? Will that work?
avast 5 uses license file and not number.
If you change the file in anyway, the license is flag as invalid.
Send an email to sales (at) avast (dot) com and explain what is happening.
Also check your system time and date.
Hooray! I scrubbed out the Avast program just as you directed. Lotsa reboots, too. Re-loaded the latest program and I’m back up!!!
I went to my license file from inside Avast and my license info came up, also.
I updated, scanned and found two (2) nasties. One was in my Firefox program. Deleted both.
Thanks for the help and excellent support.
