Avast Suite won't load on startup, msconfig won't let me check it to do so.

Hi,

Recently my daughter’s system was seriously infected with lots of misc. malware. I used Malwarebytes in safe mode to remove all it could find (twice to be certain all was gone), but it apparently missed a couple of infections because she called me today and was complaining about her internet speeds.

I went over and found that her ping times were way high. I then ran Norton’s Eraser tool which found 2 rootkits (one was net=related and the other was a host rootkit, both of which it removed.

Now her ping times are normal and all seem’s ok, with one notable issue. She has Avast Security Suite and it now will NOT startup on it’s own. If I look at msconfig, I can try to enable it to start up but as soon as I click “apply” the checkmark leaves and Avast doesn’t start automatically on re-boot.

I suspect that this is because of something that the 2 rootkits did to Avast - or - she may still have some “rootkit” type of infection. So my question is: Should I remove re-install Avast or what do you guys think about this issue?

You need to confirm the root kits are no longer an issue.(Possible DR WEB Curit rootkit software FREE Version) You can google that.
Then if you are sure the rootkits have been removed,I don’t think you need to CLEAN uninstall/Reinstall
just yet.
First try a ‘Repair’ of Avast by going to Control Panel, Add and Remove Programs and choose Avast. THen click on “Change/Remove” and scroll all the way down the options and choose ‘Repair’.Let that finish and reboot your computer. See if that changes anything> :-
Let us know how it went.
