ok-thanks you edited your msg, but sorry i’m not that good in english to guess, what u r meaning?
first of all, whats your os? which version of avast? maybe you should ask about on itunes? never used it - maybe any idea from anyone?
asyn
It’s the same problem Hally is having. We both keep getting local access only when web shield is running. When we stop it everything is fine. Web shield is conflicting with something but we don’t know what it could be. This is really hard to troubleshoot.
psikofunkster, I’ve sent a note about your post to the tech support folks. They’ll look into it (no tickets should be deleted, even the unaswered ones).
jimb11, first, emailing me won’t help much. I’m not a support person. I run all the development of avast though and so I know quite a lot about the product. Now your issue with the Vista Internet connection indicator disappearing is interesting, but hardly related to avast WebShield as these requests don’t get routed via WebShield at all. Now, you have been reporting similar issues more than a year ago (related to avast 4.8 at this time), and now with avast 5.0. Are you really sure this is caused by Avast? When you do a brief Google search, there are thousands of other people out there that are having the same issue and don’t have avast even installed. The way the indicator works is that it keeps a “heartbeat” connection to a special site hosted by Microsoft. If such a connection cannot be made (or the heartbeat stops beating), the globe icon disappears. This can be caused by many things though, including an intermittent drop-out on your ISP’s side. What makes you so positive that it’s related to avast? I just somehow think that with an install base of ~100 million, it there was really a problem like this, there’d be many more people here complaining about the same thing…
BTW in Windows 7, they dropped the globe icon altogether… who knows why, maybe because it had some issues?
As far as I can see, support for AV and other large-scale security software usually ranges from pretty bad to to absolutely awful. There are several reasons for this: complicated technical problems, enormous user bases with many varied systems, a large percentage of non-paying customers, huge companies where noone really cares about customer service. In addition, the tech support people are often very young techies who have trouble understanding other people’s feelings to begin with. (A well known neurologist specializing in behavioral problems suggests that many techies become techies because of their problems with normal human communication.)
Some suggestions:
As others have suggested, you might want to post your problem here.
You might want to address the iTunes support channels at the same time as you use the support channels here. It probably can’t hurt, and they may have heard of the problem, or a similar one.
Try the appropriate parts of general user-to-user support forums such as Tek-Tips, PCSoft, and the Windows Secrets Lounge. Your fellow users will often try hard to be helpful, and surprisingly often know what they’re doing.
While waiting for an answer, try the obvious by yourself. For example, if you trust the iTunes site sufficiently, you might want to try various methods of adding it as an exception to various parts of the security suite (firewall, Web shield, behavior shild, etc.).

it definitely did, I got another system here on Vista and the "globe’ disappears when the connection is idle, meaning in theory that you’re only connected to the LAN (not that the network is idle, which is actually never really the case), and Internet is missing…well it’s a Windows networking “FP” ;D Must also depend on which system with Vista.
note: this system never had Avast installed on it…and yes, had also Vista on another computer where the network globe was always there :D, and Avast 4.8 was installed on it.
…on a side note, is that the main reason (the network globe disappearing) why such a thread was posted ???
Because like I said if I stop the web shield everything is fine and I don’t lose the Vista Internet connection indicator. As soon as I start the web shield I lose the Vista Internet connection indicator over and over again.
you’re probably asking the OP but as said in my last post here, on Vista, when you lose this indicator, you do not lose internet access. It might be supposed to pulse accordingly with network activity but it just never does that. Most of the time it appears when you open a browser, and disappear once you’ve closed it, ie it does react to strong network activity, and otherwise it just vanishes.
The support on this forum I think is 100 times better than the support where you submit tickets. About a year ago, I had two tickets that were resolved in a very professional and caring manner. But I can say that within the last couple months I had two more support tickets that were deleted. They were relating to some bugs I had with Avast 5.
For issue number 1 i haven’t received an official response from avast yet still waiting after 3 weeks, regarding issue 2 they have deleted all my support tickets three times already without giving me an explanation wny!
My System:
Avast Internet Security 5 (1 year subscription)
Windows 7 ultimate 32 bits.
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66
4GB DDR2

Update: i uninstalled avast and installed norton internet security 2010 and i don’t have any of those problems anymore. However, Norton is more heavy i don’t like it i want my avast working without problems.
I gave up on Norton/Symantec products a long time ago. They are not only very heavy, but also
They like to work their email protection through a local application-level proxy. For someone who uses chained local mail proxies for other purposes, this can become a royal pain in the hindparts.
Their tech support is not only incompetent, but amazingly arrogant as well. Once you see the answers you get from Symantec support, you will consider being totally ignored by Alwil the gold standard for tech support.
Their methods of handling automatic renewals and licensing issues are slimy.
Many of us on this board understand and share your feelings. I hope that Alwil/Avast does manage to solve your problems.
