Avast blue System Tray icon is NOT displaying in the rite side of Task bar, so I doubt that because of this Resident protection (Standard shield, web shield & network shield etc) are disabled. Is it so??, How avast System tray icon can be restored at the taskbar to enable the resident protection again. Avast 4.8 Professional is running!
If you click Ctrl+alt+del, will ashserv.exe be running? If so, the antivirus is running.
Maybe some other program remove ashdisp.exe from the startup programs. This exe is the icon on system tray. If you run this program from avast folder, will the icon appear? Is there a red cross on the icon?
Which was your old antivirus? How did you uninstall it?
avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.
What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?
Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
Also some time a virus/ spyware invaded the System but Avast cannot detect it (while Standard shield is running). Virus is only detected when we perform a virus scan. Why Avast not detecting, when virus is entering in system.
Also I heard at Orkut that un-installing Avast, will cause windows corruption. Is it True??.
What got it back, e.g. what was the cause as it could help others ?
It entirely depends on the file type, not all files are scanned, e.g. zip files are inert (don’t present an immediate danger) until you unzip them and then attempt to run any executable file, long before that the standard shield ‘would’ scan. Since you don’t mention a) the malware name, b) file name or c) its location, I can only speculate as to why it might not have been scanned.
The other thing is the duration between it being downloaded and the actual scan, signatures are constantly added to the virus database so it is possible that it wasn’t known on download but was on the on-demand scan.
Hello, [ashDisp.exe] does its work. Thanks. also please tell me the link which can tell step by step procedure to un-install Avast4.2 Professional without any harm to Windows.
As we said what you have heard is rubbish, avast un-installs using add remove programs very well and no problems with Windows. I only wish I could say the same for some other AVs that feature heavily in these forums for the detritus left behind after an uninstall to conflict with a replacement AV.
The missing icon could well have been related to an AV or remnants on your system, you however, didn’t say if you have another AV previously, etc.
I too am somewhat confused as to why go to the trouble to restore the avast icon only to uninstall :
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
No I did not know that was an option. Thank you Pondus.
What I did to fix the problem was right click the taskbar > Properties > Notification area (tab) > Customize > and changed Avast icon from “Hide when inactive” to “Show” and the icon reappeared.
Strange though, as the avast icon is usually very active as it is animated and rotates when files are scanned, so it should have kept appearing when this activity took place.
