avast taking too long to scan outgoing email

Avast 4.8 Home edition is taking too long to scan my outgoing email and therefore I get a timed out error from the server. I am using Windows XP Pro and Outlook for email. Everything has been working until just yesterday. I have recently done a thorough scan of all local disks and drives.

How do I correct this?
Where do I find the settings to delete the scan of outgoing email, if this becomes necessary?

Are you using outlook or outlook express?
There is a difference between them.

If MS Outlook are you using the Outlook/Exchange provider which has the outlook plug-in ?

If everything has worked until yesterday, what changed on your system yesterday or very recently, windows update happened recently for one ?

I can’t answer your questions until I have some more information.

It is Outlook Express–sorry about that.

I don’t know of anything that changed in my system–I was trying to forward some emails with attachments and they wouldn’t go.

Well I use OE6 SP3 and don’t have this problem, there were two security updates for XP SP3 in the last windows patch Tuesday, but I don’t believe they were OE related.

How big are these emails being sent with attachments ?

I very occasionally get a time out from OE normally when I’m receiving a large email (I’m on dial-up), I rarely send emails with large attachments, dial-up again. I have the time-out on OE set to 300 seconds so it very rarely troubles me.

So it isn’t too unusual as avast intercepts the email in the localhost proxy then scans the outgoing email and when complete passes it on. This can take time and OE doesn’t appreciate what is going on just that it hasn’t had a response that it expects. Extending the time-out should help in that regard.

I wouldn’t advise disabling outbound email scanning.
