Avast Tray Icon Missing

I know it isn’t a huge deal, but it is something that is bothering me. On my computer and several others that I know each time on restart to get the Avast System Tray Icon up, I have to open avast. I have been told it is running in the background without the access on the task bar, but I like having quick automatic access and not having to open it every time on restart. I have done a lot of looking online but not having any luck finding a solution. I have tried going into repair and having it fix it as one place suggested a few days ago but that didn’t fix it on my computer. Does anyone have any suggestions? My startup says that AvLaunch component (2) from Avast launches. That includes the AvLaunch component and Avast Antivirus. Is there something missing from my registry that is causing it not to load the tray icon? I know I have had a few other registry issues since upgrading to 10. Just looking for some ideas, thanks!

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

I believe everything is the most updated I can get.
Free
Happened on all versions since I updated. Maybe just the 2017 update. Current version 17.7.2314 (build 17.7.3660.241).
OS Windows 10 Home version 1703 build 15063.674
Nothing running in background except maybe windows defender (because randomly it decided to start popping up auto). I do run Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner/ccleaner on occasion.
Have used avast since long before I got this computer, and have continued.

I did have a customer earlier that mentioned that it was bothersome to her, so even though it isn’t worrysome only annoying to me, it would be nice to have a fix.

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

PS: Regarding Avast & MBAM, see: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/200324-exclusions-for-avast-users/

I did this, safemode offline installer everything. Still on startup all I have running in Background is Avast Behavior Shield. Avast Antivirus I still have to open manually to get it to run in the background/have the availability down in the toolbar. This is weird since it does still have the Avast Antivirus UI component under the start-up.

I would’ve thought your issue was with a missing avast icon in the toolbar. See attached if that is still the case.

Do you show File Shield, Web Shield as running on startup?

Strange. Best you wait for one of the guys with W10.
Maybe the tray icon is just hidden somehow…??

Edit: Did you set the exclusions for Avast in MBAM and vice versa…!?

No I don’t see those running on startup, just what I have said on previous posts. I don’t see anything attached?

I actually don’t even think its actually running on startup based on the processes versus when I open it. Once I open it on startup, it stays in the toolbar. It still has the option checked “Show Avast tray icon”. It just doesn’t appear to run correctly on startup.

I didn’t include the exclusions, because I don’t run Malware bytes constantly. I am really safe about my browsing habits and only if I see an issue or feel like somethings wrong do I update and run Malwarebytes, so that shouldn’t be an issue.

The exclusions wouldn’t hurt but might do some good. That’s why they are recommended.

I went ahead and did it.

Did it help…?

After installing the newest version of MBAM, making sure everything is up to date, both programs having the exclusions, still the only avast thing running at startup is the avast behavior shield and aswblDSAgent with it. I still have to manually open the antivirus program to get it running/in the task bar.

Repair Avast:

  1. Control Panel → Add/Remove programs → Avast
  2. Click on ‘Repair’.
  3. Follow instructions.
  4. Reboot.

Had done that prior to the clean install.

Try again. (As you did set exclusions now, it’s worth a try)

Still didn’t work. Just for fun I ran disc check and system file check and found nothing. I don’t know if it makes a difference but a couple things I noticed is Avast Antivirus startup impact is listed as low, but isn’t starting up from what I can tell. When I go into the avast folder itself and open the exe that is listed under it, it does open the program interface but it still isn’t on startup. I guess since I am not finding a solution I might just have to accept the fact of opening it on restart.

You could try the latest beta: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15

Bit late in the day but I’ve had the same problem. It doesn’t always happen. Seems to have started when the behaviour shield stopped turning on automatically. This is an intermittent problem too.

I followed the instructions to repair avast! but this didn’t make any difference.

Then realised the icon is there but hidden, along with the skype icon. There’s a little white triangle bottom right and the icon is in there with skype.

Maybe others have got a much more complicated problem - thought I had until I went looking
Just thought I’d share…

The hidden icons are a result of your settings. Change them and you’ll see the missing icons.
