What is your connection to the internet?DSL,ISDN,Dial up,…
What is your ffirewall and did you allow avast to connect to the internet?

  1. My access is high speed cable via router. Charter.net

  2. My firewall is microsoft and avast. Downloaded and registered on line. I did this all before going out of town last two weeks. Acquired Avast after crash caused by AVG not catching trojan.

Spent two days cleaning up mess and using malwarebytes and spybot cleaning out bad stuff.

Download and initial scan went fine. paid the few shekels to join. It tries to update and says cannot connect to server, failed.

Have program set for auto update and machine always connected.

It appears that server does not accept me to log on? Or does my firewall not allow me to log on?

Have tried to check microsoft settings and it says Avast on ok list.

Thanks for reply with questions.

I think it is your firewall,You should allow avastsvc.exe ,avast.setup ,avastui.exe
Or try to update it from control panel->application and features"or add/remove programs" choose avast click change then update

Try selecting one of the options. Direct connection seems to have an effect sometimes.

Are you saying that you are using 2 firewalls … Windows firewall and avast firewall?

What OS are you using?

I agree with the person who suggested going into the settings. Typically, Windows computers are setup to use Internet Explorer’s settings to connect to the Internet. In Avast the connection setting may be set up like that, which could be an issue. Unless you know you use a proxy server, select the option to directly connect. I did that on a friend’s PC that had the exact same issue, which stopped updatting shortly before Christmas. I noticed that on launch, Internet Explorer took a long time to load web pages. So, I tried Direct Connect instead of using IE’s settings, and Avast updated straightaway.

I have tried the best that I can all the suggestions submitted on the two related threads. I have read the article:

https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=574

I still cannot get Avast to update. I get the following:

Failed to update the Avast! Service is not running.

I have gone to control panel and tried to force an update. Doing that seemed to work and install an update. Then it said it needed to reboot. Rebooting caused crash. I was able to recover in Safe Mode.

The reinstall software comes with McAfee. I used control panel to remove. I tried removeal tool from McAfee which started then failed. It said ‘Failed’ and would not allow access to log to save as text file as recommended by McAfee.

I have manually added Avast to permitted programs on Microsoft firewall. Any suggestions for adding the recommended additional sites? When I try to add the specific lines recommended it kicks it back saying Avast already listed.

Should I remove Avast all incluse and try to add each line individually?

I do not sit at computer all time but randomly come back to work on problem trying all posted suggestions on the two threads discussing this issue.

I also get imput from technical friends, but all together we cannot solve issue.

I agree that it appears to be firewall issue. Should I shut off Microsoft firewall and try?

After crashes, reinstalling takes much time.

Bonjour.
