Hello, I am sorry if this question has already been asked, but I have a problem with avast.
This problem has happened a lot of time to me, and i have thought that its because my windows was old (SP2 from 2004 or something). So I installed a new windows and it worked fine, till yesterday… Im using SP3 win XP.
Problem:
When i turn on my computer, avast icon (the orange spinning ball) has a red X on it. When i try to update the virus data base or the program it self it tells me that the “Avast service is not running, please start the service”.
When i go to the “Current status” panel, and click Fix now, nothing happened. I also tried the “Start program” button, it still doesn’t work.
As I said, this happened to me a lot of times, even with the Avast 4 home edition, and I had to Fix the program to make it work. But now, withe the Avast 5 home edition, fixing does not work.
Can you suggest me what to do? I don’t like using Avira…
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.

Well after i posted this i have tried to fix the problem.
First i tried is downloading a new fresh version. And i wanted to run it so i can un install avast. When i tried to uninstall the computer rebooted all of a sudden.
I also tried going to CP and fixing the program, it didn’t work.
When i tried to uninstall from the CP it rebooted again.
After that i have tried to update the virus database from the CP and it works now…
This problem just keeps happening and i don’t know why :S
I also had the problem of Avast suddenly stop working, then on a reboot it would restart again. But what finally fixed the problem was for me to uninstall Avast and do a clean install with the latest build of Avast.
Follow the directions that Tech gave you regardless of your problem being fixed now because it is likely to return.
After completing step 6, run a scan to make sure you are malware-free. Please post any problems or questions here.
How about something easier like going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > checking for errors. Although I like the idea of dusting too.
He should probably remove build 4 and 5 from his machine prior to doing a clean install. Perhaps he has remnants of v.4 still left in his machine.
