we have a client who is getting the message “avast!: Unable to open message attachment. Error code is 80004005” when trying to open a new mail or even just clicking on a mail marked as unread

does anyone have any info

running Avast 4.8 pro administered through ADNM

You would probably get more pertinent advice in avast! Business Protection section. For the rest of non business-oriented people here, v4 is effectively dead.
