This morning I got the following warning message when Avast tried to update:
Other HTTP error (404). while trying 174.120.185.186:80//iavs5x/prod-av_pro.vp
A portion of the log file is copied below. Suggestions?

I was getting the same error here too, on two different boxes. Working alright now so give it another go.

Well the HTTP 404 error as you probably know is page/file not found, so it looks like a server hiccup.
What happens if you try a manual update check ?
If this is the first time this has happened ?
Then I wouldn’t expend too much energy trying to find he cause, just monitor the situation.

Same here today. Hours & hours…
A simple uninstall/ reinstall did the trick & all is as it was on one machine - just reinserted my license key
My other PC still gets the error, so I’ll likely do the same

I would wait, as I personally can’t see how a reinstall would resolve that particular problem and may be nothing more than a happy coincidence.
You could first try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. Thought that again would seen to be unrelated to this particular error/problem.

Agree, wouldn’t think it either
… but noting the repair function didn’t solve for me (I attempted that first).
Whole thing took less than 5 minutes and now both pc’s are fine

The fact is that I teach at a local university…
Was online for my webcourse this morning.
1 hour later, no IE or Firefox…connection
Disabled webshield and now I can connect.
I uninstalled/reinstalled
download previous versions and didn’t update the program and the connection problem continued (so it wasn’t the program, but an engine/virus update.
I have the updated avast installed at present, but websheild is disabled (the program will update with webshield active, it did when I reinstalled it.
