Some wiseguy decided to install Avast on my computer while I was on holiday. Being a staunch non-believer in antivirus software, I tried to install it first thing. However, now all my Network Connections have gone, and the relevant services fail to start.
The Remote Access Connection Manager Service will not start (Error 5, access denied) and neither will the Network Connections Service (Error 126: Specified Module could not be found)
Event Viewer says “Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because it could not create buffers”
After that, it seems rasppp.dll and rastls.dll could not be found - although they are in system32.
I suspect it is some compatibility issue with Avast and Windows XP SP1, which I have installed. Does anyone know which relevant modules Avast uses, changes and/or replaces? Any help, short of the lame advice to reinstall windows, is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your answer. Maybe I should have used that, but it won’t help now because I already unistalled Avast (apparently successfully), and deleted the Avast folder and (most) registry entries manually.
Do you know exactly what this executable does, and if so, can I do this manually as well?
Maybe someone else will answer this question, as I have never used it in all my life. Besides, any comments why you’ve decided to remove avast! ? Maybe I’ll can change your mind? ;D
The automatic tool remove avast folder and HKLM\Software\Alwil Software\ keys in Registry.
I think there isn’t an incompatibility with SP1 and avast. Although I suggest you update to SP2 for logical reasons.
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer? This will bring the real problems here…
