I’ve tried the start program button andit still says the avast service stopped. I tried to repair it from the programs control panel ant its still not working. My registration is still valid, what could be the problem?? I’m a big fan of avast but this is just not working for me now…HELP!!!
did you try repair form ad/remove programs and reboot ?
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Download the latest update from the above link and run the file
I tried repair from the controlpanel as suggested by user Pondus and it has worked… I will also update. Thanks for the speedy reply…
I’ve repaired and restarted my system several times but it’s still not working. I also tried to run it manually from services and applications but nothing happened. I keep getting a pop-up saying that some shield cannot be recognised…
Thanks for the link essexboy…my system is secure once again ;D I downloaded the file, ran it and then restarted my system. Soooo HAPPY…thank you all for the input. I just hope this never happens again. Happy AVAST User
Thanks Essexboy - solved my problem too!
I went through the process of repairing my Avast (it seems to have worked fine) but, there remains a problem. I have no clue what to do. My computer has committed 99 percent of the run to AvastSvc.exe in SYSTEM as user and I cannot figure out what to do. It won’t let me end the process, says access denied. ???
And, I still cannot start or fix AVAST in the AVAST screen and my computer is very slow to put it mildly.
Try a new clean install of avast
remove with this and reboot - Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/en-eu/uninstall-utility
then install avast again and reboot
OBS: before installing avast, you have of course uninstalled any previous used AV
Phew, I didn’t even think of reinstalling avast!.
You guys can’t imagine how close i stood before grabbing my system image :
