Avast update blocking outlook express from connecting to internet

Since I have installed the latest avast update, outlook express 2008 will no longer connect to the internet. I have tried to add the program to the exceptions list within avast, however this does not make any difference.

I can still connect to the internet and browse through internet explorer/chrome, but outlook express will not connect until I shut down all the avast shields.

Can anyone please help me or tell me what I could do to stop the program from blocking outlook, as I cannot send or receive any emails in the meantime.

A don’t shut down all shields as you have no protection, the one that could interact with OE6 would be the Mail Shield.

What errors are you getting ?

The server responded with an error. Server Response '-ERR Cannot establish SSL with POP server. SSL_connect error 5:10054, Error number 0X800ccc90

Previously did this work and what avast version was that with ?

yes prior to the update there was no issue with outlook connecting to the internet, i dont know which version this was with. I update each time a version comes out so whichever version was prior to the 2015.10.2.2215 update.

I did come checking whilst waiting for your response, unfortunately I didn’t find anything on what I searched for. I changed it looking for the Error number 0X800ccc90 and found a topic that might help - https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=167819.0 - but some of that relates to Outlook not OE.

Are the accounts that you get this error code set to use SSL/TLS to communicate/send/receive email ?

If so ensure that the avastUI > Settings > Active Protection > Mail Shield > Customise - SSL Scanning, is the Scan SSL connections enabled ?

I saw that topic when searching, but unsure if was relevant given the OP’s error above doesn’t mention or seem to have anything to do with invalid certificate.

I believe it does.

Server Response '-ERR Cannot establish SSL with POP server.
That means the connection is fine, just not able to send/recieve when using SSL.

The initial post from the OP is wrong(ly worded).

But the second post is very specific with the actual error code reported.

We will just have to wait and see.

Personally I would be looking at stopping using OE6 (very, very old) and convert to another email client such as Thunderbird.

Depending on the OS, Windows Live Mail would be the logical successor to OE.

The OP said Outlook Express 2008, not 2006

If it is truly OE and not MS Outlook, then the likely answer to what OS, would be XP.

Thunderbird can import OE settings, folder structure, address book, etc.

Not sure where you are going with this, as the year doesn’t necessarily refer to the version - the last version of OE (if it is truly OE) was OE6, regardless of year.

I have checked avast and the SSL connections is enabled, so i’m not sure if this is what is causing the issue or not (i haven’t changed any settings). What exactly do I need to change in outlook/avast settings? I’m a computer beginner so any instructions will need to be very basic!

As per the link posted above ( https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=167819.0 ) I did try to see if outlook had add ins for avast but I couldn’t navigate to this section to see if this was the case.

Export the avast certificate and import it in OE.

What we really need you to confirm is what email client you are using, you switch between calling it ‘Outlook Express 2008’, ‘outlook express’ and ‘outlook’ ?

Microsoft (MS) Outlook is completely different to Outlook Express and avast treats them differently. The avast plug-in is for MS Outlook only not Outlook Express, which uses just the Mail Shield for email scanning.

I have exported and imported the certificate as per the above instructions, however I am still getting the same error message and outlook will still not connect. Any other options/suggestions would be much appreciated!

It does connect or you would not have gotten the error message from the server.

And please answer DavidR’s question.

Outlook Express 6 is what comes up under program details.

There is no add-in for OE6 that is only for MS Outlook, which is why you couldn’t find it.

I did try to see if outlook had add ins for avast but I couldn't navigate to this section to see if this was the case.

It is so long ago that I used OE6 it is hard to remember its settings or suggest other things to try.

Looking at part of the error message again “Server Response '-ERR Cannot establish SSL with POP server.”

I just wonder if it is literally that avast cant create an SSL connection with a POP server. So I suspect that your account settings in OE6 are set for POP3 connection port 110 and not the secure connection port 995 used by some ISP email servers.
