Updated Avast a couple of days ago and since then it has been blocking perfextly legitimate web sites, even The National Trust! Had to disable the Web Shiels function to get full access again.
Vista 64 bit with latest updates, Comodo firewall.
No alerts or pop-ups, but some web sites just will not load, blank tab, some will partially load, others will load slowly.
Disabling Web shield returns everything to normal.
Whilst I wouldn’t recommend this as a long term solution (but better than completely disabling the web shield), what happens if you just disabled the https scanning in the web shield settings ?
We are seeing some topics like this for those using XP and Vista, though I don’t experience it on my XP system (in my signature below my posts).
What browser are you using ?
Do you also have the avast browser security add-on (AOS) installed ?
I don’t use Comodo firewall, so I have no experience of its interaction with avast, especially if you have Defence+ or its AV enabled ?
Disabling https scanning has resolved the issue, I use Firefox and Safezone browsers, comodo hasn’t caused an issue before. AOS not installed, no other AV software enabled.
As I mentioned there are a few topics relating to similar issues with the latest version of avast on XP and Vista systems.
I don’t know if they have this recorded as a bug (and working on it) or not. The problem as I see it that it isn’t consistent over all XP and Vista systems (or web sites), so trying to pin it down probably won’t be easy.
For now I would leave https enabled (to give better protection) and only disable it on sites that you have problems with. Unless you know the specific site with the problem, disabling the https or web shield does carry a risk.
Given the number of these topics/posts about this ‘serious’ issue as disabling https scanning is no minor issue as a majority of sites are now using https. So defences are greatly reduced, as you are effectively taking the web shield out in the case of https sites.
So silence isn’t golden it is infuriating.
Given this topic was posted 3 weeks ago ‘01 July 2017’ and as ‘Alikhan’ mentions reported via slack on on 28th June 2017, yet we are none the wiser about what is going on.
I had issues with browsing starting last week on a PC running Vista 32 bit. Random web sites would either hang or not load at all. After eliminating browser issues I started turning off startup items. I finally eliminated everything except Avast.
I found that just turning off Avast web shield and even all shields didn’t entirely fix the issue. I could not disable Avast from starting using msconfig or CCleaner. It would just turn itself back on. Finally I uninstalled Avast completely. That fixed the issue. I have Avast on 3 other Windows 10 PC’s and have not seen the browsing issue.
I won’t install Avast again on the Vista machine until this issue is fixed.
