Avast! Update caused CPU to run at 100% and stopped internet

Hi,
I was prompted to update Avast! (2014.9.92016) yesterday (31.03.2014). Whilst running the update the internet stopped working. I also noticed that my CPU was at 100%. After checking, it seems that Avast! is using over 90% of my CPU. I have now disabled all shields, CPU is a lot better and I have my internet back. (A bit annoying as an engineer is coming out to look at my router!). I did try to ring the helpdesk but failed to get through).

This means that I no longer have virus protection.

Can anyone advise please?

Perform a repair, if that doesn’t solve it perform a clean installation of avast.

Hi Eddy,
I just wanted to thank you for your suggestion. I had the same issue as cws666, I performed a repair and now things are back to normal.
Thank you for your help, keep it up!

Thanks for your advice - very useful.

Unfortunately I didn’t know how to do a repair so I completely removed Avast! intending to re-install it. I had Pro Avast! which has not expired but as I didn’t want to buy another copy, I downloaded the free version. Can you tell me how to insert the licence key please to upgrade the free version to Pro?

Thanks for your help.

Please ignore the previous message as I have now found out how to insert the license.avastlic file. Unfortunately I cannot find the current one Doh . . . . !!!

Thank for your help anyway.

  • avast! repair:
XP - Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 or later - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and select Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

Thanks! Repair done and all back to normal.
Thanks!

You’re welcome.
