Avast update causes pc to hang on reboot

Updated to version 5 free today and machine will not reboot. The hard drive lights are busy, but the screen is black. I have no idea what to do. Can anyone advise?

Hours later, it rebooted. Guess it was doing a boot time scan. They should have posted a warning that the reboot could take hours and the screen would be completely lifeless. Grrrr. Well, thanks anyway.

Avast will not do a boot scan unless you tell it to plus on your black screen it would of said bootscan running.
There could have been something else in the mix, have you completly deleted all previous av’s before installing avast even one’s that came preinstalled from new.
I also find better result’s from clean install’s rather than upgrading and installing 5.0 over 4.8.

Can you give us some information about your system:

  1. What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit, RAM?
  2. What version of Avast did you install? 5.0.677 is the current version.
  3. What other security software including firewall, other security programs are you currently running or did you have in the past in this machine?

Check for Malware with Avast:

A. Once you reboot your machine, update your Avast definitions please do an Avast Full scan to check for malware. If any infections come up, put them in the Virus Chest (do NOT delete anything).

B. If any infections come up after this and you have a 32-bit machine, please run an Avast Boot-time scan.

Report all your findings in your next post. A screen shot is preferred to show the items in your Virus Chest if necessary.

Please keep all your Avast settings at default for now. Thank you.

edit: thanks!!!

@ snippy,

Please do not follow the quoted suggestions above. There is no need at this point until we have more information from you to uninstall/reinstall or revert to a last known configuration, or to suggest that anything is corrupt.

Please follow the suggestions I outlined in my post. Thank you and I will await your reply.
