Avast update causing BSOD on WinXP Pro SP3 32bit

I was prompted to update avast free this morning. After update and reboot, keep getting BSOD after welcome screen. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Win XP Pro SP3 32bit

Update:

I was able to boot up in safe mode and disable all avast related items in services and startup.
Rebooted normally and uninstalled avast.
Rebooted normally and did a fresh install of avast.
When the install completed, message said it would do a quick scan.
Quick scan never started, system became unresponsive and had to hard reset.
Computer rebooted, and BSOD after welcome login screen.
Rebooted into safe mode, uninstalled avast.
Rebooted normally, now looking for another anti-virus program to use.
I have used the free version of avast for at least three years, so I know I have no room to complain. But still disappointed. Really liked the program.
I am thankful it didn’t hose my registry or system completely, though.

This tool from NirSoft is helpful in determining what specifically caused it…

Had exactly the same problem that you described. No quick scan after Avast installed, on reboot BSOD everytime - something about page fault in non paged area. Uninstalled in safe mode and tried to re-install in normal mode but got the same problem. Gave up and went back to my back up which is running a version of Avast 8. I’m wondering if there is a conflict with Zone Alarm. Are you using Zone Alarm free firewall? The system is also Win XP Pro SP3 32bit.

There is no way to tell until the minidump file is analyzed…

That’s what NirSoft’s Blue Screen View tool mentioned above does.

Try this:

  1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

Note : You need to be ONLINE during the install (sometimes online installer works whereas offline doesn’t)

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

  1. Uninstall Avast by control panel [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
  2. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
  3. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn’t) - reboot.
  4. Install the version you downloaded.
  5. Reboot.

I think I probably have the same problem. After installing 2014.9.0.2011 BSOD just after desktop visible on two XPsp3 32bit home/pro machines.

Was able uninstall avast in safe mode with aswclear. No BSOD after restart. Uninstalled Zonealarm free firewall and reinstalled Avast; no BSOD anymore. No problem on two XPsp3 32bit home/pro already only running windows firewall.

Had a similar problem after an avast program update in october (can’t remember the version number) which was eventually solved by a program update.
