Avast Update Crashes Firefox On 3 Computers!!

Today, after updating to the newly released Avast, Firefox Free crashed on 3 computers. All same config:

Win 7, lastest Firefox, ABP, Ghostery installed. Has operated like this for years with no problems.

Could not find a roll back to earlier Avast. Avast should provide these just in case.

Had to remove both Avast and rebuild FF on one machine. Now running under Windows Defender.

Also, had Googe Chrome forced install and removal via Geek.

Any help would be appreciated!

my firefox crashed today for the first time ever. everytime i opened a email or went to a site it crashed. after the 5th time firefox asked to reset and returned everything to default settings with old.firefox folder saved to desktop.

so might not be avast causing your crashes.

Hi,
Can you try to type into url bar : about:crashes
It shows last ff crashes +link to ff web with crash report
Thank you

I had a similar problem to the others with Firefox, in my case, closing after 2 or 3 seconds. On 2 computers. There are no Firefox crash reports.
My problems went away when I disabled Ghostery; I have asked on the Firefox support forum whether people are having a problem with Ghostery and nothing has been reported.
I use Avast (free) 19.3 which is the other common factor. But - and I may be looking in the wrong place - I cannot see any reports on my systems of Avast action.
Obviously something unhelpful is happening but whether it is Avast, Ghostery or something else I have no idea; I’m posting just to add information.

Yes, same exact thing.
Wasn’t sure what it was, so I went thru a whole rigamarole involving safe mode clean install, removal of firefox, windows defender, ect.
It appears it was an incompatability with one of the FF add ons: Ghostery, ABP, & Emisoft plug in.
Removal of these cured the situation - after a morning’s work.
Added back ABP and so far so good.

Surprised this didn’t get posted as these are popular add-ons.

Thanks for your reply. Glad it is working.

I believe it’s a Ghostery issue with FF, after re-installing FF and Ghostery this morning it happened again, I disabled Ghostery and it hasn’t happened since.

I’m not happy running without Ghostery (call it spoiled) but it’s better than using Edge, Explorer or Chrome.

Ghostery was causing Firefox crashes. It seems Ghostery team has already blocked the update as my other laptop isn’t updating it when it was still on old version. It’s not avast! causing this…

Got rid of Ghostery for good and some other add-ons. I only kept ABP.
Dissecting Firefox was a nightmare. Shoulda just killed the FF ad-ons.
Hope this thread saved some others in cyberspace this angst. Suprised this issue did not get more airplay…
Thanks to all who replied and good luck!

Just to round this off: Ghostery is now enabled here and Firefox is no longer closing. The problem has either been cured, or has just gone away.

FWIW, it is a very bad idea to run more than 1 content blocker in a browser.
