Avast update - PC cannot start

I was in safe zone and I got a message saying that pay mode could not load. The link recommended updating Avast which I did. After updating Avast I cannot boot my computer. After the boot fails I get 2 options, “Launch Startup Repair” and “Start Windows Normally”. The startup repair fails, and “Launch Windows normally” brings me back to the same message.

My PC is running Windows 7, 64bit.

Please advise.

Can you still boot into safe mode…?

No. If I hit F8 while booting, I get a menu to select the boot device. There is no option for safe mode.

Is it an Asus device…?

It’s a desktop PC with an Asus motherboard.

I managed to find an advanced diagnostic tool after the boot failed. It had the following:

Startup Repair
System Restore
System Image Recovery
Windows memory Diagnostics
Command Prompt

Startup repair failed as before
System restore - there was no restore point saved :frowning:
I do not have a system image
No problems found with memory Diagnostics
Command Prompt works

My bios does not have Secure Boot. It is about 5 years old.I think this is a different problem.

Thanks, but it says “If you have a 64bit system then create a thread and instructions for the recovery console download will be given”
Do I create the thread on this forum?

Stay in this thread, I’ll ask Essexboy to join us and provide instructions for 64bit.

Thanks, I’m at work right now and the computer is at home, but I’ll monitor this thread.

You’re welcome, now you’ve to wait a bit…

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

  1. Rufus

For 64bit systems
2. Windows 7 64bit RC… I will PM the link
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

Press Start Burn

Then copy FRST to the same USB

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer. First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB

Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Thanks, I’ll do this when I get home

After booting on the flash drive I had to go a different route to what was described to get to the command prompt, but here is the file.

OK it appears that some Avast drivers were not copied across properly

This will remove the Avast services and drivers from start. If the boot works then you will need to fully uninstall and re-install Avast

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Start FRST as before and press fix
On completion try a normal boot

Download Avast Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

[]Run the uninstall tool and accept the reboot to safe mode
[
]Once complete reboot your system
[*]Reinstall Avast

I ran the fix, but the computer still has the same problem. I have attached the fix log.

Could you try startup repair again please as all Avast services are now disabled

When I run Startup repair from the flash drive it says “startup repair cannot detect any problems”, but when I run startup repair from the hard drive it says “startup repair cannot fix the problem”. Still does not boot up.

Have you tried a system restore from the boot menu
