Avast update service running for no reason

I select in options “manual” for updating the program and virus and still I see the update service “aswUpdSv.exe” is running.

Also I cant modify it or remove it from registry

I don’t want that update will run only when I ask!

Why it can not be as other anti virus programs are?

Am experiencing the same problem. I have disabled the update service and yet it is still running every single time. Means I have to watch that it is disabled when am not using it. Thanks for any help on this matter.

So, you have both “Program” and “Virus database” updates set to Manual?

Also, did you disable the avast self-defense module to do the changes?
Why would you want to set the update for completely manual?

Why would I want a service always running there in the background, a bit like a memory hogger, when it is simply not doing its job?

You must be kidding…
The service uses hardly any resources at all - it’s certainly not a “memory hogger”.

aswUpdSv.exe only takes 108K on my system.

Maybe you should should un-install avast! and try Norton or McAfee ;D

Are you talking of an antivirus? avast? ???

You have to be joking, at 232K or 588K (depending on what column you look at) it is hardly a memory hog, especially when you take a look at other processes in task manager.

The service hardly uses any resources and with the Update setting set to manual it wouldn’t be active unless you do a manual update. However with the service disabled before you did a manual update you would first need to start the service. So I’m sure you wouldn’t want to be going through that rig-ma-roll every time.

Look at my examples and see for yourself.

I would not call that light processes by far.

Just look at the peak working set of ashServ.exe

Few processes on my system have that peak working set.

ashServ.exe is the main service of the resident protection, taking care of most of the scanning. So yes, it may use some memory during its operation.

However, you were talking about aswUpdSv originally, weren’t you?

I was talking about all Avast processes that only sit in the background and do nothing when I have disabled their primary function.

With respect, I can’t help myself. If this is such a big issue, why aren’t you using “other anti virus programs”?

Well, obviously they did something when they reached the allocation peak.

Good idea, I’ll re-check all the competition. Here it’s a bit one-sided. Admins and authors keep to themselves and never

fully

open

up.

One-sided? Maybe ;D But not one-eyed!

If you’re talking free ones, AFAIK the others with on-access scanning are:
Avira
AVG
PC Tools
Rising
COMODO

Whichever product you choose, you’ll be trusting in the intention and intelligence of the developers to construct the best possible compromise in order to achieve a high level of protection with a bearable system overhead.

Every day I see Windows machines running one of the above. If any of them were to impress me overall more than avast! I would have to consider changing my home PCs to that one, which I have done in the past, but not since avast! 4.7.

cheers

Am talking about all not just the free ones.

Free is easy.

On contrary, free and good is what is difficult… avast is the best choice for a lot (most) of us
