Avast Update settings again

Hi,
I know that this topic is somehow discussed in multiple threads here. Still I did not really find the real technical explanation for the settings:

  1. “I only connect using a dial-up modem”
    and
  2. “my computer is permanently connected to the internet”

As far as I understood, 1) is pretty good known:
“I only connect using a dial-up modem” =
“Do not connect to the internet unless a RAS connection has been established”. Or “Do not trigger dial up for virus updates”

but I have my problems with 2)
“my computer is permanently connected to the internet”
… what does this checkbox really (and exactly!) technically do? Intervals of the updates? Tech to the rescue!

Regarding #2, it is my belief that this applies to any PC using DSL or cable.

Others, please correct me if I’m wrong.

Yes, maybe. But this still does not solve what this entry actually technically does.
Also DSL normally is “Dial-Up” (even if your router does this transparently for you). So this further adds to the confusion…

I came here hoping to find out what “My computer is permanently connected to the internet” does… :frowning:

I just leave the two options unchecked and I don’t what they exactly mean.

If you click on ? button, the help tells you what it does…

On this screen, you can also specify the type of internet connection that you use i.e. whether you connect to the internet using a dial-up modem or whether your computer is permanently connected to the internet. This will optimize the way that avast! checks for new updates and make the update process more reliable.

But again, that doesn’t specify what actually happens when the “permanently connected” option is enabled. Does it change how often avast! checks for updates? Does it prevent avast! from performing connectivity tests? Does it change connection timeout values? Does it affect how many retries will be attempted upon failure?
