Well were sure (certainly me) it’s ZA, you have uninstalled avast, reinstalled avast and the only constant is ZA. Perhaps you should uninstall ZA, boot and install.
Some time ago I suggested you delete the entry not change it to force ZA to ask permission by initiating a manual update (right click the avast icon, Updating, iAVS update). I gave the link in reply #15.
Windows ‘offered’ to clean up any unused desktop icons. I let it do its stuff - any hey presto, Avast Update started working again! (and no, I didn’t have 2 avast desktop icons…)
Still no idea what was wrong but now have database 14/2/2006 and program version 4.6.763, so I’m happy.
Anyhow, thanks to DavidR et al for the many suggestions, I think this will have to remain as a windows-induced mystery.
Well, Greenalien, I am certainly glad that your problem fixed itself with the “clean up any unused desktop icons” but that is a strange fix. My XP did that “clean up” thing a few months ago but I was not having a problem before nor did I have one after. It’s hard to understand how cleaning up the desktop icons could solve your problem.
