avast update use a lot of CUP

I found when running avast update use a lot of CUP.
when I was playing the game, The game is lag and freeze for few seconds, during avast running update.

Before I was using avg don’t have is issue. :-\

I would suggest you don’t update whilst running a game. I’m on dial-up so I have my auto update set to ask (Program Settings, Update (basic)), but the check still takes place but not the actual update.

Did you actually record the CPU usage and what processes were using most of it ?

You should also check the 'Check for full screen applications (e.g. games) before displaying popups in Program Settings, Troubleshooting. Whilst that probably won’t stop it checking it won’t display any pop-up possibly taking focus.

thanks , I will change my setting to ask.
I have check processes was avast.setup used 98% of my CPU when is running it, and avg update processes cost but 24% of my CPU.

What version of avast are you using as the update process should be lighter than that the latest is 4.7.1043 ?

Home 4.7.1043

That is strange as the update process has had the priority lowered in a recent program update. I guess you will have to see if the other tweaks I mentioned resolve the issue.

Welcome to the forums.

May I know your RAM size? I’ve played LineageII online, listened to WMP, login to YM and with lot of other program running but still I don’t have any problem with avast! update feature.

1GB ram

The guidelines for solving of the problem “ashServ.exe using too much CPU” has always been the same:

  1. Check if the avast tray icon is spinning (while CPU usage is high)
  2. If it is, click it (wait for the dialog box to open), and check which file is being scanned (the Last Scanned field); the Scanned Count value should be increasing (spinning icon means a scan is in progress)
  3. Find out which of the providers is scanning the file (click “Details” button and check out the Last Scanned value for each of the providers). The most common providers that may cause this are Standard Shield, P2P Shield and IM Shield.

Tech it wasn’t ashServ.exe using the CPU but the update as indicated in reply #2, quote below.

I see… mixed two problems in the same thread. Sorry.

I have change update setting to manual and every things work fine.
thanks a lot for you all help

Your welcome.

Don’t forget to periodically do a manual update, right click the avast ‘a’ icon, select Updating, iAVS Update.
