Avast Update

Using Home edition ver 4.6 Getting error messages that it is unable to connect to the internet to update even though I am always connected. Is there something I’m not doing right? Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you using a firewall? If so, check to make sure that avast.setup has permission to access the internet.

Yes, I am using ZoneAlarm. ZoneAlarm is set to let Avast access the internet. How do I get to the setup in Avast? I am a new user of this software. Thanks.

There should have been a pop-up that says avast!(update, webserv, etc.) is attempting to access the internet. You just click allow.

Or go to the “Programs” tab and find avast.setup and set it to “allow”. Or switch to Sygate Personal Firewall free and get a traffic log that shows what is happening when things don’t work like they are supposed to.

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights)
ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) (allow email rights)
ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

If you are experiencing problems just after boot, it will be better to change the time (delay) of updating after the boot.
Into avast4.ini file there is a setting for this [AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds]. Click Settings (link) in my signature 8)
