Welcome to the forum.

  1. What version of Avast did you have installed?
  2. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
  • Other security software
  • If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor’s uninstaller’s tool or another way)?
  1. Are your MS/Windows Updates (current)? Does your Vista have SP2 or SP1? If it only has SP1, please upgrade to SP2 first. Reboot.

Save a copy of Avast and save it to your HDD:

Did you uninstall Avast via the Uninstaller Tool before installing MSE? If not, please uninstall Avast using the tool:

  • Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe and save it to your HDD.
  • Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  • Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
  • If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Uninstall ALL versions/products of Avast on this machine one at time and reboot in between each uninstall.
  • Reboot.

Then you can uninstall MSE http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2435760/ and reboot your machine.

Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free:

Update the Avast definitions.
