An avast window comes up saying the last update attempt has failed.
I tried to uninstall Avast but the uninstall failed part way thru.
I also tried to install another hoping it would fix it. It obviously has not. How can I fix this ?

Which is your firewall?
Try to set “No proxy” at avast update settings (instead of automatic detect).
Dont have a firewall as such
Have Spyware Terminator, Zappit, Registry Mechanic
I changed the setting to direct. did not make a difference

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?
I Managed to delete it using ASWClear5 and re installed. It now
seems to update. Thank you for your attention

Well I guess I spoke too soon ! My avast is again putting up a window saying the last attempt to update a failed ??
I went to control panel to remove, anticipating a repair window to appear but instead got a warning that "a Getiface error has occurred . Try to reinstall or contact suport ???
Vic
I suggest an installation from scratch:
Well I did an uninstall and download a new one as instructed above and within seconds of getting thanked for downloading Avast, the window appeared saying the last update attemp has failed ???

Are you using Windows FW or a third party FW?
What version of Avast are you using? The latest version is 5.0.594, and you should be using this.
When you did your uninstall with the avast! Uninstall Utility, did you do this in Safe Mode? If not, try the process again but uninstall using the utility in Safe Mode.
Also, remember to reboot after you install.
Sorry for the delay in reply. When re installing Avast I finally realized Spyware terminator was blocking and I had to click “allow” numerous times. Finally I uninstalled it, performed another install of avast and now for a week it is updating itself.
Thanks for your interest and help ideas Vic
