Avast upgrade caused huge mess

I made the mistake of upgrading to a paid version of Avast and now I’m trying to undo the damage. I uninstalled the upgrade but the problems are still there.

For starters, I can’t open any links in my emails. It’s ironic that you sent me a link to this site in an email, since I can’t use it. How do I fix this? I also can’t save anything into a shortcut anymore – I get a message that reads: The protocol http does not have a registered program. How do I fix that?

It’s not clear to me why you’d change the browser on my computer without informing me first, since I absolutely didn’t want that, any more than most people would. I uninstalled Chrome and then tried to download internet explorer again – now everytime a IE update gets installed, I lose the internet browser entirely. How do I fix that?

I’ve been using system restore, but of course, that’s not a long term solution.

Since i’d been using Avast for free, I thought it would be nice to show some support and get the paid version – I should have left well enough alone. Now I may have to pay somebody to get my computer working normally again.

u can try switching off mail shield (also anti spam if ur using the internet security version) temporary to see if it is the cause of the problem. as i m not a paid user, i cannot help u diagnose the problem. please be patient for an Avast team personal/more experienced forum members to help u.

as for google chrome, there is an opportunity for u to untick google chrome installation in Avast installer unless u missed it.
previously, there was a bug in the installer which installed google chrome on certain systems despite unticking chrome installation in Avast installer.

if u unticked chrome installation in Avast installation but still got chrome, please report ur system specs here
eg. Avast v7.0.1426 (internet security? free? pro?) windows (xp? vista? 7? sp 1? 2?)

please be patient for a response here. after all u just posted today

note: do not pay anybody yet until it is proven that the forums cannot solve ur problems.
also if the problem extends into the weekends, Avast team ppl may not be around to help out except forum members like us
when it comes to that, please wait till the weekends over.

Thanks for getting back. On Chrome, I don’t remember seeing an Avast installer or a checkbox for Chrome. I downloaded the trial version, which might be the issue here.

I’m not sure what’s safe w/ the mail shield, if it’s a risk to turn it off or not.

I think I’ll have to turn off windows updates somehow until I can get this fixed. I’d just reinstall Internet Explorer, but it won’t let me do that.

I’ll wait for more advice, tho, thanks for suggesting that.

Probably you’ve followed the default installation, not custom one.
