HP computer Running WinXP Pro, SP3 and Avast 2015.10.0.2208
When I turn on my computer the Avast User Interface opens also. It just started to do this. How do I get this to stop? I updated Avast and got the same thing.
I tried suggestion one above, to “repair” and that didn’t work. I upgraded Avast and that didn’t work either.
I have three other computers that are set up the same and they behave themselves. This one was fine but just started this Interface opening a couple of days ago. It’s my wife’s computer and she doesn’t download software.
I tried using Adware-Removal-Tool and that removed some “Conduit” items, but that didn’t help either.
Do you have any program like mail client or messenger where you have to set your AV to check files you download. See if you set it with avastui.exe. It should be set with ashQuick.exe.
This used to happen with the old msn Messenger or Windows live Messenger.
In order for you to have download managers call your antivirus program scan downloads - then you have to give it the command line address to the scanner C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\ashQuick.exe. If however you gave it the wrong command - C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\avastui.exe, then all it would do is open the avast User Interface.
Hopefully that would explain the differences. However if this is opening on boot then I rather doubt that is the problem as you wouldn’t be downloading files on boot - or I don’t think you would be downloading files.
How do you have avast check files that you download ?
This should happen automatically (without having to do the above) as the web shield should scan files being downloaded.
The file shield scans newly created (saved downloaded files are essentially new) executable or targeted files that represent an immediate risk if run.
So you shouldn’t need to take any other measures to scan downloaded files.
In all honesty I think that those measures are somewhat premature as it doesn’t look like we are chasing malware but a program issue - otherwise I would expect to see other symptoms.
In Avast I go to settings/active protection/mail settings and click on scan inbound mail (POP 3, IMAP4)

That setting will have no impact on scanning files that are downloaded from your web browser (that should be being done already as mentioned in my Reply #12), it certainly isn’t the cause of the UI opening.
Essexboy is most likely correct that the /nogui (don’t display the user interface) element being missing from the avastUI.exe command on startup. I’m surprised that a Repair didn’t resolve that.
Bob, my goal was to attempt to see the run key for Avast!. Essexboy, being the Fixer Upper, indicated the /nogui thing. A FRST scan would show it.
The FRST scan was an attempt to have someone who probably isn’t familiar with the Registry avoid the dangers of it…
We can try this if you like. (Note: aswClear is clickable text and will take you to a direct download for it from Avast!'s site)
[]Please download aswClear and save it to your Desktop.
[]Double Click the Icon ( http://i.imgur.com/TqekTER.png
)
[] It’ll boot into safe Mode automatically once given permission
[]If you installed Avast in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
[]Click REMOVE
[]Restart your computer Restart.
If it’s still not functional, please say so. I still have 2 more tricks. The last being absolute last resort, the other, Essex will have to do since I don’t have the expertise to administer it…
