Avast V8 causes reboot loop (on Win7 Pro x64)

Hi!

After the auto-update to V8 my system shows a reboot loop. I used the safe mode of windows to uninstall Avast (with aswclear).
A new and clean installation of V8 works without errors … until I reboot the system! The reboot loop is back again. :frowning:
Windows boots just before the login screen. You see the black screen with the windows logo and the keyboard lights flash up, but instead of showing the login screen a reboot occurs.

Now I installed V7 again and everything works fine. I hope they can fix the issues of V8 soon. The green video bug occurred also.

I am running Windows XP and had the same problem last night after upgrading to version 8. Seemed to install fine then when I restarted the pc it reboots when avast starts up.

Started in Safe Mode and removed avast and everything works again.

Do you have any minidump files (in C:\Windows\Minidump folder) with timestamps corresponding to the crashes/reboots? They could tell us what’s going on.
Thanks.

I have that problem too >:(

Sadly there are no dump files inside this folder.

I tried V8 on another Win7 x64 PC. This time it freezes the storage driver of my 3ware RAID-Controller! The consequence was that the firmware of the RAID-Controller always forces a reset (driver timeout)… The PC in my first post uses the AMD AHCI driver - maybe the bug is storage driver related?

I had exactly same problem when I updated to avast free 8.0.1482. I was forced to uniinstall avast 8 and switch to other antivirus program Unfortunately, my C:\Windows\Minidump folder is empty so I cant give details.

I would really like to continue using avast but not before this problem is fixed. Glad to hear I’m not only one with this annoying problem!

please upload the BSOD’s dumps to ftp.avast.com/incoming

dumps should be in : C:\windows\minidumps

give them a unique name and specify name in this topic…

also this can help: http://youtu.be/V2dBAQFETbA

does this help anyway : http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=116242.msg902806#msg902806

OR

you guys could try installing avast 7 back again from: http://www.oldapps.com/avast_antivirus.php

same problem here…windows 7 home premium x64.

I read this in another post but haven’t tried it yet to see if helps any.

Hi, please try modified version of aswVmm driver (64 bit Windows only):
http://www2.avast.com/files/aswvmm/x64/aswvmm.zip

  1. Disable Avast! self defense
  2. Replace aswVmm.sys in Windows\System32\Drivers directory with downloaded version
  3. Enable self defense again
  4. Reboot

After reboot dynamic CPU clocking should be back, It should also fix missing L1/L2/L3 cache info

Is this a safe fix? Worth trying?

Today I noticed some strange high RAM usage in Avast free AV. I’m using Windows Home Premium 7 64-Bit as well. But today after the restart of my PC I got the blue screen of death for the first time ever. I think that the Avast update today made this conflict. I hope it won’t happen again.

Hannu - I don’t really know for sure as I just ran across the suggestion when I was searching for a fix for the same problem as above.

But, since it is only a driver file, I would simply rename the original file before replacing it with the modified one. That way if it doesn’t help or work, you should be able to boot to safe mode, remove the modified driver, and rename the original file back to its original state.

If you take a look through some of the similar postings on the this forum, you will run across the one I saw.

I may have decided on my own just to try it because I believe the problem lies in one of the two drivers trying to load during the boot process.

So my apologies if this doesn’t apply. Too many problems with the new Avast 8 on multiple machines (Vista x64 and 7 x64) so was looking for solutions for hours last night. The modified driver may only apply towards people having high cpu usage too.

I really do think there is major problem with one of the two drivers being loaded. No Vista x64 installations work on any machine. Always freezes while booting. Looking like it is actually freezing at one of the two driver modules. I also believe our rebooting issue is driver related too.

It should be noted though, I do have it running without any issues (yet) on one Windows 7 x64 laptop and three Windows XP tower pcs.

??? Ready to give up on avast for awhile and go to something else until they fix all the bugs in version 8. Or maybe will go back to version 7 for now.

Thanks for your post. In case I boot in Safe Mode with Networking & delete Avast which is version 8 & I am also facing the repeated reboot problem, how can I Install Avast Version 7 & install its key? I do not remember the key. Can I get the key from Avast? I am facing the problem since Avast was upgraded to version 8 (as I remember it was done automatically). If possible kindly send a copy of your reply on forum to

It may not be the official reply but it worked for me.

Modifying a driver is tricky enough.
The fix I fould out involved a single registry setting.

Use it or don’t.
That’s up to you

I am using Windows XP. Auto-upgrade to V8 caused reboot (frequently before I can do any thing on system). I removed Avast in Safe Mode & now system seems to be working fine (touch wood … no auto-reboots since then) but now I am using system without any Anti-Virus software. Should I install Avast version 7 or any other
AV software? How to install Avast 7. I have a recovery CD sent by Avast at the time of purchasing the Software.
What is the use of this CD? How to avoid auto-update to Avast 8 till it is stable? I checked c:/windows/Minidumps folder & has many dumps there (I guess last from last auto-reboot caused by Avast problem … dated 23/3/2013).
What can I do with this dump? Can Avast support help & as in one of the posts Avast Support asked for this dump. Best wishes, RAKESH (rkj951@yahoo.com)
