hi all , new here , but love the software !!

been using free avast for a long time now , got a new laptop from dell 2 days ago , removed Mcafee as soon as i booted up (no problems) , installed avast from a clean download (latest version on the site today) , on re booting i get the below error message , and NO avast icons appearing on the task/time bar…

please help

ps , basic vista version in use

Could you please post a screenshot of regedit, with the opened key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ALWIL Software\Avast\4.0
?
Thanks.

hi , regedit screenshot below :

Huh, that’s definitely not how it should look like… :frowning:

Did the installation really complete successfully?
Can you try doing a “repair” of avast? (Control Panel → Programs and Features → avast! antivirus → Uninstall/Change → Repair).

Thanks
Vlk

i have removed (also through avasts remove) avast 4 times now , re installed , no problems reported at all at any time , have not tried a repair , will try now

vlk , very sorry , above regedit is after a “removal” , have re installed again , same message , bit regedit is now more interesting , please see below , steve

Maybe the same problem like I had! Don’t uncheck the Box directly under “The Bat” - it’s the standard-guard for avast!!! Maybe it works! The menu is a little bit confusing in that point.

It seems you ran the avast setup program in Windows XP compatibility mode. Is that possible?

This is not supported, and will not work.

Thanks
Vlk

compatibility mode isnt something i have chosen to do , have checked the exe i’m using and comp mode is not enabled for it , i have removed it countless times now , and re installed , no comp mode has ever been used , so i’m at a loss here…

SORTED !!!

i have download , but using the RUN option directly from the website , and it has worked…previous installs where from saving it to the h/d , then running ,have no idea why this wont work as the machine is “out of the box” , no changes to file structure etc , and tried setting the exe in admin mode under properties also, double checked that compatibility mode hasnt been used the last few tries also…mystery , but from now on , i’ll be recomending “run” and not “save” for vista

I also had this problem. After installing/uninstalling multiple times where i always changed the program folder (default: program files) to ‘Programme’ (i have a german windows vista installation). i tried the standard path wondering if this would work… and it did :o)
So everyone having this problem should try this.

btw: ‘run’ the file directly from downloading didn´t fix the problem for me.
