Are there any others with this problem???
Yes, I am having the exact same problem. Installed Avast Free yesterday (and checked for updates), and immediately started getting errors on/from Carbonite, which has been working fine for over two years. Called their support and they remotely logged on to my computer and custom configured Avast to make an exception/allow *(?) Carbonite to run/work. Still no-go. They (Carbonite) are aware of this problem and the tech has obviously been through this drill. This problem is a result of a recent change to Avast. XP, Carbonite and AVG coexisted happily since who knows when. Disabling Avast allows Carbonite to run fine, with no errors. Is there a fix coming any time soon, or do I need to go back to AVG?
XP Pro SP3

Avast Free current version
Using Firefox FWIW
or do I need to ask for a refund and let other know Avast does not work with Carbonite.

Avast and Carbonite used to work well together, but recently (since the last Avast update?) they are no longer compatible. I spoke to Carbonite (who has great customer support), and they made the changes shown below, which usually works. However, it is not working for me. When I paused Avast, Carbonite worked. Then when it unpaused, I got an error message: “Carbonite Secure Backup ENgine Stopped Working and was closed”
Will Avast fix this, or should I replace it?
In case this did not copy properly, go to the Carbonite Support Knowledge Base and search for Avast.
- Right-click the Avast icon in your Windows and click Open
Avast! User Interface. - Click Settings in the top right of the window 2. that appears.
Navigate to Active Protection, select Customize (next to Web Shield), and
select Exclusions. - Navigate to Active Protection, select Customize (next to Web Shield), and
select Exclusions. - On the Exclusions page, click the Browse button next to a blank line.
Then select the following locations to exclude from the Avast scans:
C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup\ (32-bit Windows)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup\ (64-bit Windows)
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Carbonite
\Carbonite Backup\ (Windows XP)
C:\ProgramData\Carbonite\Carbonite Backup\ (Windows
Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10)
C:\Program Files\Carbonite\Carbonite Mirror Image\ (if you have
Carbonite Mirror Image)
Use the + (plus) signs to navigate to the correct locations, ensuring that there is
a check mark next to the Carbonite Backup folder for each location you add.
6.
Click OK when you have finished selecting locations to be excluded and Avast
will automatically add each location as a separate line on the Exclusions list.
7.
8. Click OK at the bottom of the Settings window and close the Avast User Interface.
You will now have successfully configured Avast to allow Carbonite access to the
Internet.
I have followed the previous post and entered the exclusions as was stated but I still have the same problem with Carbonite not working. I have spoke to Carbonite several times and they say that it is an AVAST issue. I am running XP. I have the AVAST and Carbonite programs on my laptop running windows 7 and don’t have any issues. Is there any other solutions that will resolve the issue?
I have the same problem. After implemented the paid Avast, my Carbonite stop working. I spent 2 hours with the Carbonite remote assistance without success. They said that AVAST should take care because it is blocking Carbonite to back up.
My OS is Windows Vista.
Can someone help?

Tried the prior exclusion and Carbonite is still crashing on XP. Submitted a ticket and waiting to hear back. This is the second time I have encountered this exact same issue. Last time I went with another antivirus.
This has been affecting me since March 9. Avast free 11.1.2253 and the current carbonite, on Win XP SP3. Disabling all shields perrmanently, then rebooting allows carbonite to run. When done, re-establish shields. Not a good solution.
I am facing the same problem with Avast and Carbonite. It started when my existing version of AVG updated. Uninstalled AVG, installed Avast and the same error appears on a Windows XP SP3 Dell PC. I guess that’s not surprising considering they are the same company now although their software is supposed to be different. On the call for over an hour with Carbonite, they said it’s an Avast problem.
I set all the parameters stated in the previous post, error still pops up. Spent over an hour on the phone with Avast Premium support. Again, they have no answer other than to charge for cleaning up some old software uninstalls that were performed.
Has anyone found a solution to this issue or can you recommend any free anti-virus software that will work with Carbonite?
Reported to Avast. Let’s see if that helps.
