Avast Warning and delself icon

This morning, using IE6, I received a warning from Avast about a trojan or virus. I tried to delete it to no avail. I tried to quarantine it, again to no avail.

I now have sitting on my desktop an icon named delself.

I’m not sure what it is or if it’s malware, how to remove it.

I only get the Avast warning using IE, not with Firefox.

I’d appreciate any help.

What reason/errors were displayed when you tried to delete or move to the chest ?

If you have XP, vista32bit or Win2k, you could enable a boot time scan. Right click the avast icon, select Start avast! Antivirus, a memory scan will take place followed by the opening of the Simple User Interface, Menu, ‘Schedule boot-time scan…’ Or see http://www.digitalred.com/avast-boot-time.php.

Deletion isn’t really a good first option (you have none left), ‘first do no harm’ don’t delete, send virus to the chest (even if using the boot-time scan) and investigate.

I tried scanning the icon with Avast, and nothing turned up. I then tried to open the icon and nada! It has suddenly disappeared. I did a search for it and nada.

Also, I’m no longer getting the warning from Avast.

I’m assuming all is well… I hope so!

Thanks,

Alaura

Try a scan with MBAM,

Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

At the end of the install, place a checkmark next to the following two options:

* Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
* Launch Malwarebytes' anti-Malware

Click Finish.

MBAM will automatically update and launch, if the above options are checked.

Once the program launches, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.

When the scan is complete, click OK → Show Results to view the scan results.

Pace a checkmark next to all the items found, and then choose the ‘Remove Selected’ option to move the selected items to the quarantine.

When the scan is finished, a log will open in Notepad with the scan results

If no joy with MBAM.

See the results of a google search on the icon name, http://www.google.com/search?q=delself.

This one gives more info and another tool, FixWareout, http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/index.php?showtopic=117376.

You could also try, SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.

micky, I downloaded the program and installed it – one must pay for it to use its features.

David, I had Googled it prior to posting here.

As I mentioned in a previous post, it seems to have disappeared. If I do a START Search, nothing is being found, although the first time I tried that (when I still had the icon on my desktop), it was found.

I’m assuming all is well.

Thank you,

Alalura

No, MBAM can be used for free.

Windows Search often misses many malware because they are designed to hide from this search.

This is why you are being asked to use these other 2 programs.
