Avast Web Guardian not scanning on R3dfox web browser

Hi,

I’m using R3dfox 147.0.4 64 bit web browser. This is a fork of the Firefox 147.0.4 web browser, so it is all based on Firefox 147.0.4

I am using the Avast free anti-virus.

The Avast Web Guard / real time anti-virus scanning for web browsing works fine on Firefox 115.32 ESR. If I use Firefox to access the anti-malware test page at the eicar site designed for testing anti-virus software, Avast flags it, blocks it, and passes the test.

However, Avast does not flag or block it if I access the same anti-malware test page on the R3dfox 147.0.4 web browser. (Whereas if I download the ant-malware test as a file and save it to the computer and do a manual scan of just that file, Avast will still flag it as a virus.) But Avast isn’t doing the real time Web scanning on r3dfox like it is on Firefox 115.32 ESR. The R3dfox browser is the installed version, not the portable version.

So is there any way to get Avast’s real time Web Guard to work with R3dfox like it does in Firefox?

Thanks.

Just a guess, if you download eicar via http (not https), does Avast Web Guard flag it?
Why I asked is, HTTPS scanning is heavily relied on browser-specific behavior so that only selected browsers are supported, no matter it’s a fork or not.

Couldn’t find any non https versions at eicar to test this. Although when trying to do an internet search for one at google’s website using r3dfox, I did encounter a non-https url where the site triggered Avast’s url:blacklist block/warning.

Since most sites use https, this would mean Avast Web Guard real time web scanning is usually going to be incompatible with R3dfox then, is that correct?

It isn’t what NON is suggesting, just that you connect to the eicar site using http and not https (there is only a version of the eicar test file).

What NON is suggesting is to ensure you are able to connect using http in this fork of firefox, confirming the fork and https aren’t compatible. I suspect this may be the case with other antivirus programs.

My default browser is firefox but regular stream.

Oh eicar.org removed http link from their website, sorry. You can use this link instead:
hxxp://files.trendmicro.com/products/eicar-file/eicar.com

As you got URL:Blacklist on your R3dfox browser via http but not via https, meaning https scanning is not supported on R3dfox browser.
Just make sure you have enabled this settings: Avast Interface => Menu => Settings => Scam Guardian => Web Guard => “Scan web traffic of uncommon applications”

Thanks.

The non secure eicar at http (without s) at the trendmicro address you gave does trigger the Avast Web Guard in r3dfox. So it is the https issue you mentioned. The “scan web traffic of uncommon web applications” setting is checked, but Web Guard still does not trigger on https in R3dfox. So it does seem to be the https incompatibility issue with R3dfox you mentioned.
