With Avast Web shield ON my speed is reduce of 50%… For now, I had to disable web shield!
What is the problem and is there a way to use web shield without affecting our internet speed???

how do you measure the speed loss…
From speed test of my supplier (http://67.69.239.132/indexFR.html?useRegion=QC) and other (http://www.speedtest.net/… I tested it with all protection on and after with disabled proctection to finally pinpoint the problem to the web shield protection of avast!
The shields may effect how the speedo at speedtest.net work ?
The only way to measure this correct is to download a big file like 5 - 10 times with the shield on and take the time, and get average, then you repete with the shields of…

Well speedtest.net will fluctuate between tests and there will be a margin for error.

All tests were run within two to three minutes.

Since we have had no guesses so far I will put you out of your misery.
The first test (image1) was carried out with the web shield stopped, the second (image2) was with the web shield running. Whilst there is a bit of a difference I felt that it was well within the margins for error on these tests, so I ran it again with the web shield running, image3.
So I could say that my tests revealed that with the web shield running it is 40.60% faster test1 Vs test3, but I wouldn’t as I know how fickle these tests are.
When I got my fast broadband installed I did a number of tests over several days to see just what my new connection would give, all of these tests were carried out with the web shield running. This image attached shows the fasted of the various tests I conducted.
That is why I was saying that the tests really are a bit fickle and often bear no resemblance to real life use of the internet.
I have just run the test with the web shield running again 18.95Mb/s and it is very close the third test I did 18.18Mb/s in my first reply.
Notice in the images, my last one in this post and the last one shows a distance of 300 miles, yet the others in the first reply show < 50 miles. Now I don’t know how speedtest.net arrives at these distances so if they aren’t accurate how can we rely on the rest of the figures being accurate.
No difference here with/without WS
Mind you, I don’t like like Ookla although it’s quite fun to play with it across different implementations
The problem is that I could feel and see that my browsing was slower than normal. That is why I decide to run those test to see if my impression of slower speed was real or not and if it was reat to find the culprit and report it!
Here’s the result with and without webshield from my ISP tools. My speed is always 6 to 8MB slower with webshield on than when webshield is off… For me, that’s a bug! At least, on my system and for wich I would appreciate if Avast technical support could take a look on it and solve it!
What Sympatico service package do you have ???
I have the 6MB DSL package.
I have the 16Mb DSL package…
No effect here either - so if the effect exists it seems to be peculiar to your system (so far).

in the xp but in win7 it is normal. ???
I use windows XP (SP3) and my connection is tune up like you can see when webshield is off…

i already reduce the sensitivity of the web shield into (low)
but i do not try disable.
i understand that this new release is design for 64-bit system.
maybe for some users that using high speed net connection the reduce in speed is unnoticeable.
i did unchecked the “enable web scanning” and the speed back to normal.

Well I just used TCP Optimizer, which I have had on my system for years, but hadn’t used it since I got broadband about 4 months ago. I used it to wring what ever was possible in my old dial-up.
When I set it to 20Mbits connection (it is actually a max of 40) and set it to optimal TCP settings, rebooted and ran the test again with the the web shield enabled, what a difference. My upload speed is restricted to 3Mbps/s and download 40Mbps/s on my package.
You have effectively stopped the web shield if you don’t have the “enable web scanning” option checked.
I don’t know where you got the idea that this new release is designed for 64bit (not that that would make any difference to downloads/speedtest, etc.). Best not to speculate.
The only additional thing for 64bit is the boot-time scan. There have been elements for 64bit OSes for some time but it isn’t a native 64bit version. It is a 32bit program version which can adapt itself for 64bit OSes when installed on a 64bit OS.
I doubt lowering the Sensitivity would make much difference as the traffic is still going to be routed through the proxy I have mine set on Normal (the default) I used to have it on high, just that I forgot to bump it up after a clean install after the beta trial.
Those on high speed broadband are possibly more likely to see a difference as they are going to be pumping more data into the proxy to be scanned.
I just ran a test on that XP SP3 link on page one with the web shield running and was getting up to 5MB/s download speed, when I did the snapshot it was reporting an average of 4.3MB/s which is the fastest I have ever had (after my TCP Optimize spell).
