Hi, I’m having a problem with the Webshield in avast.
When I have the webshield enabled I am unable to view any web pages as they do not load. If I disable the service, I can view web pages without any problems.
I also noticed that if I stop the service and then start it, it displays the message “The provider is waiting for a subsystem to start” but the service never fully starts.
Can you help?
I have the following setup:
avast version 4.8.1201
Windows Vista Home Premium
Windows Firewall
IE 7 & Mozilla Firefox.
More Info. When I first start windows, the webshield says it is running, but if I do manage to open a webpage the webshield does not scan anything. I know this because when I turn on detailed mode, it does not alert me to any activity.
I am having the same problem. The problem first cropped up after I updated to Avast 4.8, I had been running 4.7 for several months before then. What happens is the Web Shield module blocks my browsing unless I disable it. The funny thing is that sometimes it will work fine, but other times it will not work after boot-up and only rebooting seems to solve the problem. If I stop it and then re-enable the Web Shield again, I get the same “The provider is waiting for a subsystem to start” message.
Also, I had a new problem with it after the update to 4.8.1201 that might be related to this. I booted with the Web Shield disabled (my fault, I set it to be disabled by default by mistake), so I re-enabled it and set it to be enabled by default again. After a few minutes, I realised there were about 50 instances of ashWebSv.exe running at the same time, with a new process being created about every 10 seconds or so. After disabling it again, the processes were still running and at this point it was quicker just to reboot to get rid of them.
My setup is rather similar.
Avast 4.8.1201
Windows Vista Business SP1
Windows Firewall
Firefox 3.0 RC1 & IE7 (although I had this problem with Firefox 2.0.0.x as well)
I’ve followed the instructions about setting the firewall to allow ashWebSv.exe, though I don’t understand how I’m only getting the problem sometimes. One would expect it either to work all the time or not at all.
Anyway, hope this helps in finding the cause of the problem. Thanks.
This happened for me some days ago (Vista Business 32bits) but not anymore… I’ve started Webshield and persist the changes. Now it’s working.
What is bad is that it could be on disable state in background and there is not an alert from avast
