First time installing.

have you removed the previous antivirus program that was installed on your computer before you try to install avast?
which was that program Norton?
if so download the uninstall tool from nortons homepage and run it. sometimes it leaves files behind after you uninstall it.

There are no other antivirus software installed and I have never installed avast before, I am trying to install avast on a new hard drive that I installed windows xp on.

I see Cnet in that log, so I’m guessing you were using the stub installer from Cnet?
Try this instead>>http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
"H:\WINDOWS.0" What is this folder? ???

Still cannot get it to install. H:\WINDOWS.0\ is all the Windows files

Do you mean that H:\WINDOWS.0\ is where Windows was installed (windir variable)? Or that is the “source” of your Windows installation, where the original files were located so to install Windows in the “windir” path (for example, instead of installing directly from optical media)?
