Avast Window not appearing...upgraded to Premier...less functionality.

I upgraded to Avast Premier last night and ever since, when I click on the Avast icon in the system tray, it creates a large unclickable space (about the size of the usual Avast window), but it doesn’t actually show the window. I also paid for a subscription to the Avast Shredder, but I can’t seem to be able to use it since I can’t make the window with the app in it appear.

When I right-click on the Avast System tray icon, I can click on “Open Avast user interface”, but the user interface doesn’t allow me to utilize any of the Avast programs except a basic virus scan. I’m confused. I thought I was supposed to get more functionality out of my “upgrade”. This is a lot of money for nothing more than a problem so far.

Also, when I first upgraded, the interface that allows me to access the Avast Shredder opened up automatically, but after I ran the shredder, a white window appeared and would not go away. I tried clicking the “x” at the top right-hand corner of the window and I tried the Ctrl+Alt+Delete method to close the program, but it would not respond. Nothing worked to close that window until I shut down and restarted the computer.

  • Which version of Premier…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  • Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?

Program Version: 17.1.2286 (build 17.1.3394.46)
OS: Windows 10 Home (64-bit) Version 1607 (Build: 14393.693)
Other: None (Windows Defender is Off)
Always used Avast. Never anything else.

You could try the latest beta: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15

Well. I uninstalled and downloaded the latest beta. I installed and ran it, the window appeared and seemed to work…but after a week, it stopped working again. I can’t see a window for it, I can’t even open the user interface like I could before.

In fact, it actually seems to have gotten even worse because now my task manager shows that Avast Premier is running and using 45% of my CPU.

You should have installed the latest release:

since you’re having problems I suggest you try a Clean Install of Avast:

OK. I used the uninstall tool (very annoying…couldn’t remember my password and in Safe Mode you HAVE to use the sign-in password as opposed to the PIN), downloaded the latest Premier, and installed it afterwards. It appears to be working…again. Hopefully it REMAINS working this time. So far, every time I try each of these methods, it works for a week and then goes on the fritz again. (Knock on wood*) If something happens again, I will come back and post another reply to this topic.

Thanks everyone!

(*Cross your fingers that nothing happens this time.)
