Avast Windows 10 start menu stops working randomly.

Hi guys,

Few months ago I was facing a problem where the start menu wasnt working. Rebooting helps but the problem returns. After figuring out, I found out that Avast was the problem. I deleted it and installed Avira. The only problem with avira is the high CPU usage it uses. So a week ago I decided to install Avast again. Still the same problem.

But Avast works well with games but Avira doesnt, but Avast gives my computer problems.

How can I fix this bug with avast? I tried reinstalling it.

  • Which Avast…? (Free/Pro/IS/Premier)
  • Which version…?
  • OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
  • Other security related software installed…?
  1. Avast Free.
  2. Latest one.
  3. Windows 10 64 bit latest build.
  4. Nope.

First, be sure to get rid of all remnants of your prior installed AV(s)…!!

Then:

  1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.

I reinstalled Avast a serveral times. It didnt work. When I uninstalled Avast the start menu problem is gone.

It is not Avast that causes the Start Menu to stop working, it is a general problem. I had it several times when using Bitdefender Total Security, since switching to Avast Premium it hasn’t happened. Just restarting the computer would solve the problem (make sure it is a restart, not just a shut down and reboot).

It has been reported plenty of times in association with Win 10, not with a specific AV.

If you are using the latest Tech preview build, that’s probably the reason.
I rolled back since I also had that problem plus the SysTray isn’t functioning properly either. (Display)

Like I said I haven’t got these problems with other AV’s. Only Avast.

Also, do you know how many times I’ve restarted?

Have you tried restarting into Safe Mode with Networking and then restart into regular mode ???
The problem also happens to computers that have only Defender installed. It’s a Windows 10 problem.

Yes, then its gone but after a while the problem returns.

You need to complain to Microsoft.
They are the ones who should fix the problem.

but avast is the only AV where this happens.

No it is not.
It happens with others also as you can read in this thread and it also happens without a av installed.

Hi, I just want to say that this problem is not fixed yet. I’m giving up on Avast, after so much trying of reinstalling this AV, it does not seem to help. And YES, I restarted my PC ALOT. If someone still finds a solution then that’s appreciated.

-PC SPECS IF NEEDED–

i3 4130 @ 3.4 ghz
gtx 750 ti oc’ed (happened also before i oc’ed my gpu)
8 gb of ram
1 tb hdd
windows 10 home

Giving up on Avast for a Microsoft problem makes no sense to me but, it’s your computer.
There is a simple fix: boot into Safe Mode with Networking, once done, boot back into regular mode and the problem is history.
