Avast with Outlook 2003

I recently installed Avast 4.7.1001 home to replace Norton.
Since I started using Avast, the following happens when I use Outlook 2003:
a) mail in the in-box takes forever to open (especially with images) but in general its taking much longer than with Norton AV
b) when I type an outgoing e-mail, the text no longer appears as I type but the screen remains blank and the entire sentence / string / paragraph appears a few seconds / minutes later…
Is there a way I can change Avast settings so this doesn’t happen, and does anyone else have this experience?
Running XP Home, all updates applied, and yes, I fully uninstalled Norton, including running the uninstall tool…
Thanks for any advice!

Norton can be a real pig to remove it gets so deep into the system.

However under normal circumstances when you do get rid of NAV avast is much quicker.

I don’t use Outlook but in the Outlook/Exchange provider you have an option to Scan archived messages on open, I would suggest you uncheck that option, see image and perhaps scan message bodies if checked.

If you are storing a lot of emails in your inbox that chould be the potential cause if they are being scanned when the archive is opened. I would basically keep it clear with the exception of inbound emai you have yet to read and action, then move them to a more appropriate folder.

I’m having the same problem. No Norton either. I just upgraded Avast to 4.7 (I had been running the earlier version for about a year). Once I upgraded, I got the exact same behavior in MS Outlook 2003. It’s very frustrating.

Have you tried to follow the suggestion from DavidR?

I followed DavidR’s instructions, and the outgoing mail improved but incoming mail still takes ages to open, especially if it includes any type of graphics. Does Avast just do a more thorough scan than Norton, or do it in a more resource-hungry way?

Generally, generally, avast is more conservative than NAV on resources usage.
In this case, I’m not sure but seems that avast plugin for Outlook could be improved.
Which are your Outlook plugin settings?

Not sure if I can get to these settings - I am using the free for home use version…

Those settings are available from home or pro version, I’m using avast home and the image I posted shows them

You need to open the avast Outlook/Exchange provider, Customize, Scanner tab.

Follow David’s advices.
I’m interested if you’re scanning ‘all’ messages or just the ‘unread’ ones…

I beg to differ…
from my help file
Resident Protection Settings

"Resident protection settings can be reached from the Simple User Interface, from the Enhanced User Interface, and also by clicking on the resident protection icon in the system tray.

Simple User Interface. Only a general setting may be chosen from the Simple User Interface - you have three levels to choose from. For more info, see Resident Protection Configuration in the Simple User Interface.
Enhanced User Interface. In the Enhanced User Interface, you can reach all the possible settings of the resident protection. It can be done by directly editing the Resident protection task. (Click the “Resident protection” task with your right mouse button and select Edit.)"
It tells me the enhanced user interface is available only with the Pro Edition…

I’m not sure what your begging to differ about.

I’m an avast home user and I have access to the settings I displayed in the image. Left clicking on the avast icon (single or double depending on your windows settings) in the system tray will open the Resident Protection Settings. Essentially the "and also by clicking on the resident protection icon in the system tray " bit in the reference you posted.

Or you can right click the avast icon and select On-Access Protection Control. You should now be presented with either a summary of the settings (image 1 below, click the Details button) or image 2 below.

So the settings are available from other than the Enhanced User Interface, which isn’t in the home version.

I think David found your problem…

I hope so, then perhaps andrewa can check out the suggestions we made and see if that improves the situation.

Thanks for the clarification, I have now found the settings and adjusted them accordingly. Sorry for the confusion.
Outlook 2003 is now working much faster - I had the “scan archived messages on open” option checked…

No problem, glad that we could help.
