AVAST wont install

My Wife’s HP Windows ME machine fails to load AVAST or hijack this. I have attempted loading via thumb drive or CD. I also tried to just search thru IE, but the IE page closes as soon as the search is attempted… She said that her computer has been working normally just slow & unable to print. Hence the reason why I’m looking at it. But thats another trouble with the spooler.

Any help would be appreciate,
MIKE

Hi…

Does IE shut down with any search or just when security software is sought? What AV was on her system previously?

Also, can you go to online virus scan sites such as…

http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/

If so, please run a scan to make sure this isn’t malware related (which I suspect this is.)

Best Regards…

IE closes when just the mentioned are searched.
I suspect malware as well, I’m just unable to get the tools that I’m familure with to remove them.

Started scanning now

Try if any of the full computer on-line scanning could be installed:

Kaspersky (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32
Trendmicro housecall
F-Secure
BitDefender (free removal of the malware)

Hi…

Please let us know what the results are.

Best Regards…

So far housecall completed the scan, but unfortunately I was @ work & my wife cleaned what was available… There was only a single file that didn’t delete, but was easily removed in safemode.

When attempting to visit Kaspersky, ESET NOD32 via search engine, IE still auto closes. I did notice BitDefender & f-secure redirects me to another page. If I click on one of the sub-links I’m able to access the page. i.e. downloads

loading F-secure & Bitdefender now, I’ll let you know. But so far same results after Housecall scan & clean. I’m going to scan again tonight in SAFEMODE

Typical infection behavior…

I’m not sure it works on SafeMode due to ActiveX components could not be loaded.
Maybe you could download CureIt from Dr. Web (in this or in another computer) and run it. It’s a standalone application (does not require installation).
